Boalsburg Moto Hang

Everyone is welcome at the Boalsburg Moto Hang.  The next one is in a few hours.  5:30pm to be exact.  So plan to stop by either today or the next event.  The Moto Hang takes place on the first and third Wednesday evenings of the month.  Ken Hull sent out this note which I’ll share:

This Wednesday we will be meeting at the Moto Shack from 5:30 to 7:30. Three things to note: 1. 2017 posters will be available for purchase ($5). 2. We have a porta-john on site. It’s on the other side of the little wooden shed. 3. Please try and arrive closer to the start time of 5:30 and not too much earlier. I need time to get things set up and ready for everyone before bikes start rolling in. Thanks for understanding.

The images below will help illuminate the experience.Continue Reading

Boalsburg Moto Hang — Today!

June 15, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 10 Comments

Boalsburg Moto Hang posterIt’s Time for Another Moto Hang — June 15, 2016 at 5:30pm

Today is Moto Hang day and will be held at a member’s place.  Jason and Lori Letterie will open their property near Tusseyville to host this evening’s get together.

If you’re new or not sure you want to attend I’ve finally gotten around to processing some of the images from the first three events this year.  At the bottom on the page you’ll find links to more complete collections of images on my Flickr site.

There’s a lot of tradition around the Moto Hang already.  This photo hangs in founder Ken Hull’s Moto Shack in Boalsburg as a reminder of where the group comes from — now in the third year of gathering.

The Moto Hang, previously known as Pistons and Pints, is the brainchild of Ken Hull and a way for riders interested in getting together to talk and swap riding stories.  It’s really caught on beyond what I think Ken expected.  That’s why this year every second Moto Hang of the month is at a different location.

Even though it was kind of cold and raining when the Moto Hang started there were still a number of riders who braved the weather.  That’s what Aerostich and Klim is for right?

The second Moto Hang was hosted by Craig Kissell, owner of Kissell Motorsports.  It was the first event to not take place at the Moto Shack in Boalsburg and was a great success.

Everyone is welcome regardless of whether you ride a Vespa or a Harley.  We’ve seen mini-bikes, side car rigs, and everything in between.  It’s fascinating to see what shows up.

I don’t know what the exact count is on motorcycles and scooters now but they’ve spread far beyond the space behind the shack.  It’s a moto-happening now.

Plenty of opportunities to be rebels.  But you have to show up.  Take a moment to peruse some of the images from past Moto Hangs and Piston and Pints events on my Flickr site.

Boalsburg Moto Hang

Rain throughout the day made me wonder whether the first Moto Hang of the 2016 season would be cancelled.  To make matters worse I was walking to the event in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania because I didn’t have time to pick up my scooter from the dealer — repairs are complete and it’s ready to roll.

Unlike the normal crowd of machines seen at a Moto Hang the turn out was light this evening.  It was some of the Aerostich and Klim crowd making their way in the rain to Ken Hull’s “shack”.  The shiny pipes on a Suzuki Boulevard was the only cruiser to appear.

By 6:30pm the skies cleared a bit providing a glimpse of sunshine — momentary relief from scattered mist and drizzle.  Not the sort of weather for a lot of shiny machines.  The two motorcycles on the left belong to Ken.  By the end of the evening four riders made their way to Boalsburg.

On the wall of the shack is a portrait of Moto Hang members from the past.  This was before my time.  There were a lot more women in attendance in the old days…

Also on the wall was a representation of my Vespa experience.  I guess I’m always at the shack in spirit.

Craig Kissell of Kissell Motorsports shares a story of riding through a hurricane with 100mph winds and blinding rain.  Actually I think he’s talking about one of the new electric ZERO motorcycles he has in the shop.  I’ll have to check those out.

John arrived on his Yamaha Tenere 1200 — a machine you expect to scoff at rain.

Paul Ruby at the Moto HangDespite the “Alan” label, this is Paul Ruby.  He arrived by truck this evening.  During a discussion of a Moto Hang presence in the upcoming Memorial Day parade it was determined Paul should lead the group in his 3-wheeled Cushman Police vehicle.

Dennis at the moto hangDennis, another sometimes character at the Moto Hang.  He arrived without his Harley (still in pieces) and his Honda Magna at home.

Moto Hang group photoFirst Moto Hang group photo for 2016.  Happy campers.  I should have adjusted the mirror on the Suzuki so I could be in the picture.

Talking at the Moto HangAlways some storytelling going on at the Moto Hang.  I almost bought one of those bright Aerostich Darien jackets.

Paul ruby and Ken HullPaul always has something unusual going on in his life.  He just shared a picture of his latest purchase — some sort of street sweeper he found at an auction.  The discussion of how it might fit in the parade was underway.

KTM at the Moto HangAs things wound down people started to leave.  The departure of the KTM signaled my own trip toward Duffy’s Tavern where I picked up a cheeseburger for my wife.  Seemed the least I could do since I was walking by on my way home.

For a more typical look at what goes on at these events have a look at a past Moto Hang.
