Letters from Cleveland

April 29, 2010 by Scooter in the Sticks 14 Comments

Junior is in a canine boarding facility certain I have abandoned him and my Vespa sits in the garage waiting patiently for it’s next outing.

Myself, well, I’m sitting in a hotel lobby in Cleveland wondering what to do for the next few hours before an afternoon appointment. I have my Leica M6 and a lot of film. I have my journal. I have my iPhone. And I have a dozen pages of handwritten notes and stories about the BMW F650 GS that had last month. Craig Kissell is probably beginning to wonder if I will ever post on that bike.

The BMW was a different experience than everything else I’ve ridden. Who would have thought a mere machine would cause a mini crisis of faith…

I’ll have time to work them out over the next few days as I post these letters from Cleveland.

Caged Regrets

February 7, 2010 by Scooter in the Sticks 14 Comments

Friday afternoon on my way to retrieve Junior from Sporty Dog Daycare I see a scooter pass by.

The snow was just beginning to fall and for a moment I regretted not being on the Vespa.

With a face like this waiting the regrets melt. And the snow was piling up fast. I can ride another day..

No More iPhone Pictures

November 15, 2009 by Scooter in the Sticks 30 Comments

My daughter Hannah says my iPhone pix are not so good. I’m not ready to abandon it yet.

Gordon patiently modeled for yet another camera picture.

I am working on a real post with real pictures for all the purists…

iPhone Vespa: 3 Prints Project

November 8, 2009 by Scooter in the Sticks 10 Comments

I have a lot of film to process. Chemicals in the darkroom have gone bad and need to be remixed. But still I make sluggish progress. The Vespa makes it to Saint’s Cafe on another crisp Sunday morning to bemoan my indolence with Gordon.

Magic tea with my everything bagel surely will re-energize my creative world.

Shooting with the iPhone is a bit liberating—I don’t care about much photographically with it. It’s like being a kid again. A kid with a Vespa…

The Cold, Damp Ride to Work

November 5, 2009 by Scooter in the Sticks 11 Comments

Waiting in line at a traffic light behind a big yellow school bus.

Out came the phone to record this moment and acknowledge the approach of shorter days and descending temperatures.

Riding, even in these dark days, lightens the spirit. Go little Vespa.
