On Down the Road: 2022

The more powerful and original a mind, the more it will incline towards the religion of solitude.

I love the quote by Huxley on solitude. Not so much to think of myself possessing a powerful and original mind, but rather to excuse my life long attraction to solitude.

I’m not sure if it’s a result of my genetic programming, the fact I grew up an only child, or just an accident or circumstance. What I do know is I’ve spent a lot of time apologizing for wanting to be alone.

But I’ll save this topic for another post. Right now I want to take a moment to consider the year which has raced by, and the new year ahead.

And to wish anyone reading these words my best wishes for a happy, safe, and satisfying New Year!

Thoughts on Memorial Day

May 31, 2021 by Scooter in the Sticks 14 Comments

“I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”

― Dwight D. Eisenhower

For the Fallen on Memorial Day

So many names etched in stone. So many lives sacrificed in our country’s wars. It’s difficult to not feel a great sadness for what each of their families must have felt. And at the same time gratitude for their actions that has produced a debt that never can be repaid. At best, I can remember them. On Memorial Day, and each time I walk through the Shrine at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.

Things That Have Never Been

January 1, 2018 by Scooter in the Sticks 32 Comments

There are a lot of rides I want to make.

Less than 200 miles from my driveway and the Vespa will be winding along the Blue Ridge Parkway. And the Adirondacks are a mere 300 miles away. Celebrating the birth of a new year fuels speculation of things that may become real. Dreams and plans for tomorrow and beyond. But perhaps the new year is closer. Right in front of me.

Now.

Earlier I took a ride on New Year’s eve — late afternoon in the frigid air under a sunny sky — to see the ice sculptures in town that will be part of the First Night celebrations in State College, Pennsylvania.

The wandering ride into town required special attention because in places the snow was blowing making two-wheeled travel challenging.Continue Reading

Breathing in Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2017 by Scooter in the Sticks 16 Comments

Valentine's DayHeart, Mind and Baubles

There was a time when Valentine’s Day was a puzzle to solve and find the precise gift or surprise that reflected the depth and breadth of my love and commitment.  While not strictly measured by dollars, it often involved considerable investment of money, time, thought and energy.  Sitting here writing I can’t remember a single “thing” that resulted from said investment.  They’re lost in the collective mass of things we’ve collected in a life.

That’s not to say they weren’t appreciated, used or otherwise held value, but at the end of the day I suspect what was remembered was the effort.  The act of trying.

As I think of Valentine’s Day now it is not about shared tangible assets.  It’s more focused on the the psychic investments two people make in each other; the commitment to being there, through thick and thin, to provide reliable comfort, support and love independent of action or earning.

It’s about the durable concern for one another and holding on through the entire ride that life has prepared. Flowers are nice.  And everyone loves candy.  And a motorcycle would be a hoot.  But none of that matters if you can’t trust someone to have your back.  Or be there when you’re sick.  Or accept you when you’re miserable.

Valentine’s Day is a monument to the human potential of loving in spite of things not being as you want or expect.  When you want to say the very best — it’s not something Hallmark can help with…

My two cents…

Wishes for a New Year

December 31, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 16 Comments

2015 New Year's greetings from Scooter in the Sticks

As the new year unfolds before us I wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a happy and safe new year both on and off the road.  I hesitate making resolutions, mostly because as I review my journals written over the years (40 years worth) I see the same things come up — eat better, exercise more, and pay more attention to life.

So I suppose my resolutions are cast in concrete.

Best wishes for a New Year!
