Vespa Scooter into the Christmas Season

December 7, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 20 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter in front of a festive display of holiday decorationsSigns of the Christmas Season

Passing through town on the way home I noticed a flock of flamingos.  Evidence of the coming yuletide holiday season.  Had to stop for a picture though I’m not certain why exactly.  Perhaps it’s the color.  I have a mountain bike that’s the same color as those birds.

Salmon.  Not pink…

Not sure how much riding I’ll get in before the holidays.  At the end of the week I supposed to drop the Vespa off at a local body shop to have the rust and corrosion from many winters of salty riding taken care of.  They say that will take two weeks.  Could be the next time I’m on the road I may run into Santa Claus.

Ho ho ho…

Vespa Merry Christmas

December 24, 2015 by Scooter in the Sticks 34 Comments

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”
― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Vespa GTS scooter in snowy Rothrock State ForestRiding lets my mind wander and gnaw on things.  Like why Christmas feels so different now than it did as a child.  Where has the magic gone?  Or maybe it’s right here and I don’t even realize it.  Christmas means many things and each of us has a different experience from a devout religious embrace to the more secular versions complete with the attendant commercial trappings.  I have my own journey through the holidays helped by the focusing nature of a ride on two wheels.

Two years ago on Christmas Eve I was riding the Vespa in a light falling snow in Rothrock State Forest.  This year the temperature will be above 60F with light rain.  So I looked into my image archive in hopes of finding a little holiday spirit and a Vespa Merry Christmas.

Steve Williams and his VespaThe contrived attempts at seasonal imagery make me smile — and wonder if I could have been electrocuted?  It was cold that night and making images with a self-timer on the camera while tethered to lights was a bit frustrating.  I don’t recall saying “humbug” though.

Christmas tree on Vespa scooterI had to include a shot of bringing the Christmas tree home on the back of the Vespa.  This was the second time I had undertaken the task and it go a lot of attention from people passing by.  In my head as I imagine the “ideal” holiday image I see the Vespa hauling a tree along a snowy road in Currier and Ives fashion.

Christmas tree in the snowSeven years ago the tree in our front yard was covered in snow.  It reminds me of the feeling I had growing up at this time of year.  The magic of lights and dreams and expectations.  And the world felt softer and for a time friendlier.

Vespa GTS scooter on snow covered roadRiding can distill perception to a hyperfocus on the road and the scooter and little else matters — especially when snow is involved.  For me, that intense focus opens a door to other things — like the meaning of Christmas.  I don’t believe I’ll ever completely exhaust exploration of that topic, at least I hope I don’t ever tire from it, but I have learned a few things.

Christmas greeting from Scooter in the SticksAs much as I like buying things and giving gifts, as the Grinch ponders, Christmas doesn’t come from a store.  In Christmas I feel the opportunity for renewal and rebirth in the family of man.  What looks dark is bright and hope abounds.  And a kinship with others on this mortal coil made just a bit easier with a smile, some cheer and the magic of the holiday.

To each of my friends and acquaintances, to those who read and follow the scooter through the sticks, to all those people known and unknown — I wish you a Merry Christmas.  I hope you find your own path through the holiday.

Vespa Riding in Snow

December 20, 2015 by Scooter in the Sticks 10 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter on snowy forest road

Looks as if the year will end without snow so I had to go digging in the archive for Vespa riding in snow.  This photo was made on Christmas Eve in 2013 in nearby Rothrock State Forest.

Haven’t put the Heidenau snow tires on the scooter yet.  Looks like I can wait awhile longer.

Looks like Christmas Eve this year may get near 60F.  That sounds more like Florida than central Pennsylvania.

Remembering Christmas

December 25, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 12 Comments

Vespa GTS in the snow

No dashing through the snow on a one cylinder Vespa this year so I pulled an image from last winter of one of the more picturesque winter scenes.  Quiet snowfalls are just one of the many images and ideas in my head surrounding the holiday season.  Remembering Christmas is part bittersweet exercise and part challenge to the soul to engage the world with a bright heart and wide smile.

Oh, and by the way, Merry Christmas to all!

Corner Room Restaurant in State College, PA

The magic felt as a kid remains elusive.  Perhaps it doesn’t exist as my adult mind has become too twisted with mature thought, rational behavior, and a mechanistic approach to living that stifles possibilities for magical thinking.

During the run up to Christmas I’ve witnessed much energy and resources invested in the season — decorations, parties and food.  Enjoyable and fun, but not successful in stirring the excitement of my child fantasy of Christmas.

I remember when it happened.  Nine years old, late in the evening after the traditional Christmas eve party followed by a candlelight church service at midnight complete with carols and shimmering desire for Christmas morning.  In a sudden, tearful recognition at bed time I knew it was gone.  No thrill in my stomach or imaginings of Santa Claus.  I was just gone.  My father came to say goodnight and listened to my sadness and told me the feeling would return again when I had kids.

He had that ability to make me feel ok — about Christmas, problems at school, or cutting my thumb in half with my Cub Scout knife.  I wish he was here now, to help me remember Christmas.

Christmas lights in Boalsburg, PA

Colored lights and evergreen trees help make the spirits bright.  Just like the song.  Snow would be a plus but I’m not at all bothered by the snow free weather.  Aside from movies, television and a wealth of Christmas card imagery I’m not certain I have any memories directly connected to the white stuff.  Instead I remember people, and parties.  There are a couple years of adolescent bar-keeping at our Christmas party at the wet bar we had in our family room where I carefully made mixed drinks for people.

On Christmas eve our kids were here and we talked a bit about our favorite gifts over the years.  And the least favorite.  Thinking about those questions I realize the brightest memories and feelings have little to do with presents.  Like the time my dad had the bad chili.

I was maybe twelve when my dad was sick on Christmas day from eating chili, presumably it was too spicy and hot.  When you’re twelve years old and focused on the holiday the health issues of your parents don’t seem too important, especially when it’s an intolerance for spicy food.

Years later I got the real Christmas chili story and it has become indelible in how I see my family and Christmas.  Here’s the short story:

Late on Christmas eve dad goes to the neighbor’s house to help him put together some toy for his kid.  Alcohol is involved.  After finishing the toy he returns home and retrieves a 110 pound weight set in a box from the trunk of the car.  Struggling with the box as he makes his way up the stairs to the kitchen door our overly excited dog jumps on him and he ends up at the bottom of the steps with three broken ribs.

My mother, hearing the commotion, descends the stairs when my father, drunk, looks up into her eyes and say, “An angel!”.  Her response, “Go to hell!”. He spent the next day in bed. The chili story sprang to life but I never learned who hatched the idea.

At the time I slept through this and only knew dad had eaten some bad chili.  Now I have a more striking picture of Christmas with my parents.  And until his death I had never seen my father drunk.  A case of Rolling Rock would last a year.

These are the stories of Christmas that stand out but again, have not helped me find the magic I once held as a kid.  Maybe when a new grandchild appears the magic will return.  I want to be a kid again at Christmas…

Hershey's milk chocolate at Christmas

I had a brief thrill this evening when I was handed six big Hershey bars.  I still love a Hershey bar, the memory of them from another century to the way they taste now.

Tucano Urbano scooter mitts on Vespa GTSI hope each of you has had a fine holiday.  For those of you who still feel the magic, maybe you’ll share how that happens. In the meantime I can report that the Vespa is back together, the heated grips working and hot, the Tucano Urbano mitts in place, and a short test ride accomplished on Christmas day.

Happy holidays!

Gifts for Scooter Riders

December 20, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 13 Comments

winter hats on manequinsI received an inquiry from a woman seeking ideas for a Christmas gift for her father.  Here’s that note:

My dad is an avid rider in New England (Vespa and a “project” Lambretta). I’m at a loss for a Christmas gift this year. Do you have a favorite piece of gear, book about riding, or other misc thing that you would love to give to a Scooter pal?

Gift giving is an art.  For many a nightmare.  I’ve been fortunate to enjoy the hunt and remain unconcerned with the reception.  Putting myself in “dad’s place”, I tried to imagine what a New England rider might want.  In the end it really was about what I would want.  Result — gifts for scooter riders is a tricky business.  And a little working through what I think I want but not really.  Like the bomber hat with the rabbit fur.  I’ve thought about owning one of those since I was a kid.

But I digress…

Illuminated tree for ChristmasWith as much Christmas spirit as I could muster I sent the following message about gift ideas for a fellow scooter rider.  Perhaps readers can add others.

Dad’s and Christmas are always a problem, even the Vespa riding ones!

A lot of the Vespa experience is personal so it will be difficult for me to make recommendations but I’ll give it a whirl. I’m assuming you don’t want to buy him a brand new, shiny Vespa….*grin*

I would visit scooterwest.com — it’s a big Vespa scooter parts and gear enterprise. Once there search for “signs”. You’ll see a number of metal Vespa signs that a lot of us who have scooters like to display in our garages. Don’t ask me why. I have one.

If you know the exact model scooter your dad has, you could give scooterwest.com a call and tell them you want to buy some maintenance items — oil, filters, sparkplugs, etc. Even if your dad already has some of this he’ll need it eventually and he’ll be impressed that you picked this stuff up.

On the left hand navigation of the scooterwest.com site you’ll see their holiday gift giving guide. That area will have Vespa hats and shirts and such. Always a safe bet for Vespa riders.

Thinking about books — there are many. Take a look at Ghost Rider. While not about scooters it does look at the riding experience. A lot depends on your dad and what his riding is like. Aerostich has lots of books.

Or this — gloves. I love getting riding gloves. Aerostich makes some fantastic Elkskin ones.

And the last thing, the one I like most is the gift of riding time. You might have to coordinate this with your mom or dad’s significant other. Give him a Christmas card with a written note that basically says you want him to take a riding trip. Maybe it’s a little homemade gift card entitling the bearer to depart for a couple days — a guilt free, don’t worry about mowing the lawn, fixing anything or washing the car. The only requirement is to take some pictures, eat some good food and have a good time. I would love getting that gift.

Saint's Cafe mug with candy canesSo if you’ve found the perfect gift for a scooter or motorcycle rider leave a comment.  You may ease the stress of a gift giver and make a rider happy.

Quick update on my Vespa:

It’s still in the garage dismantled, heated grips connected but still have to secure the wires, put the pieces back together, and basically spend an hour or so to get it back on the road.  Or to the point where I can put the winter tires on.  Things have been busy at work and I’ve had little energy left for my poor Vespa…
