A glimpse of a Vespa Ride
The 10th video I’ve produced for Scooter in the Sticks.
I’ve decided to continue experimenting with this media. And of course, continue to post photographs and text from riding experiences.
For this entry, I was interested in how short I could construct something that still had meaning.
The Vespa haiku text:
My silver machine
Morning fog softly whispers
I continue on
amateriat says
I have to tell you
This “less is more” stuff just rocks
Keep up the good work
Steve Williams says
Thanks. I’m just beginning to imagine the possibilities with video. Just need to bridge the gap between idea and construction.
Steve Williams says
It’s so different than my at times long-winded narrative text and photo-based posts.
Don Etheredge says
Wow!!! Thanks, you rock man!!!
Steve Williams says
I appreciate the support. Thank you.
Karl Stumpf says
Continue on my friend.
Steve Williams says
I plan to Karl.
Jim Zeiser says
I’m waiting for your next haiku:
My Blue machine
Front wheel pointed skyward
Back tire smoking
Steve Williams says
Oh no, I hope that haiku isn’t in my future! I can read that as an aggressive ride, or a post-crash scene. Either makes me squirm.
David W. Dill says
I see that you have come to a fork in the road with your comments. And so I say, “adieu” as I have to take the other fork. I have enjoyed your previous writings and thoughts on scootering but cannot go down the path your are taking. Stay safe on your scooter rides.
Steve Williams says
Enlighten me? Not sure what fork you are referring to?
From my perspective, I plan to still write narrative pieces with photographs from rides on both the Vespa and the BMW. And also post a video every two weeks or so.
Regardless, best wishes on whatever journey you decide to take.
Dieter says
I’m assuming the Hawkwind reference is a coincidence? 🙂
Steve Williams says
Since I had to look up Hawkwind, I would have to say whatever reference you’re referring to is a coincidence. If I were making a reference, it would more likely be to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds!
Seriously though, what is the reference?
Dieter says
They have a song called ‘Silver Machine’, iirc it was about a bicycle. I got reminded of the song by your video. It must have been 15 years or so since I heard it.
Steve Williams says
I don’t know that song. I’ll have to investigate.
There is a song that reminds me of my Vespa. It’s a song by Low call “Silver Rider.”
David Masse says
Nice Steve.
Steve Williams says
Thanks David.
Tom says
Nicely done. I enjoy writing haiku myself so this was a real treat.
Paul Ruby says
I’m guessing you are stretching outside your comfort zone sone, taking some risk, doing what you feel strongest about. In the process of doing that did you feel more present and awake? That would be an extension of scooter riding- to experience peace and connection.
Steve Williams says
It’s not so much moving outside my comfort zone as it is exploring an alternative method to communicate. By adding sound and video it opens a door to sharing a more emotive message. At least that’s what I’m thinking.
While everything I share on Scooter in the Sticks is my opinion, I try to avoid telling people what they should or should not do. Expect with winter riding in the snow — don’t do that.
Right now making a video is an exercise in ideation and thought. That’s enough for now. Like other things in my life, I’ll continue until it ceases having value to me. Like shaving and getting my hair cut!

There’s something about the constraints of using new or different tools that seems to foster creativity. I could be wrong, but sense and appreciate this in these new formats you are exploring. I would agree with Paul that this could include a measure of risk, reminiscent of the risks of riding a scooter or motorcycle.
I’d like to add that something I admire about your work is the sense that you don’t try and talk over the scenes your portray. You seem to intentionally get out of the way while also bringing insights that we the viewers may have otherwise missed. It feels authentic. The unvarnished sights and sounds of nature in this video are just beautiful.
Steve Williams says
I agree with you Andy about the power of constraints. Some of my best work emerged from constraints of time, tools, or form. Perhaps these videos are another example of just that.
I don’t feel any risk in anything I shoot or create that’s akin to riding a scooter or motorcycle. Apples and oranges.
You’re right in your assessment that I don’t want to talk over the scenes portrayed. The same is true of the text and image posts. Not completely sure of the mechanics at work, but I do tend to keep things low key.
I was hoping the camera would record the sounds I was hearing when I shot the video clip. Early in the morning the forest echoes with bird song.

Well done, Steve.
Steve Williams says
Thank you for sharing your haiku Floyd. It’s the first I know of that was inspired by Scooter in the Sticks!
