Riding vs. Photography

Scooter in the Sticks show announcement cardPromotion

The clock is ticking.  Only 35 days until I hang my photography show at the Art Alliance Gallery Downtown.  Time is slipping away and there’s still much to do.  Finished a batch of show announcements today and started to place them around town.  The stack in the photo was at the Pump Station Cafe.  Plan to distribute more tomorrow.

By mid-afternoon I should have the first batch of enlargements in hand.  Fingers crossed that the printing is acceptable.  Everything is coming together in my head.  The physical reality of putting together a photography show is not far behind.

Despite the dearth of postings, I’ve been riding a lot.  Plenty of raw material for blog posts but the show has me distracted.  Hard to identify, let alone write, when the brain is focused elsewhere.  Still riding.  Still making photographs.  Life seems pretty simple.

Hope to see text prints for the 4ox60 prints this week.

For now, I’ll fade away to sleep.

Really nice looking poster! I’m sure your show will be a hit with all the work your putting in.

Thanks Richard. Still a lot to do but I’m pleased with how things are going. By the end of this week I should be in good shape.

Hope you will consider publishing a book of your photos for those too far away to see your show.

I do plan to publish a book of photographs and essays. Someday. But first I want to build a few smaller books in hopes of generating a little money to offset the cost of the book. Lots of things to do!

Steve… i’m not sure what the gallery exhibition equivalent of ‘break a leg’, is, but whatever it might be, feel free to do it. It is wonderful that others will now get to share the images for which, we have great fondness.
    All the best Steve.

I hope I can attract some non-riders to the show and give them a taste of the two-wheeled world outside of the “You’ll kill yourself” mindset. Thanks for your good wishes. I do appreciate them.

Up early here in Washington State reading your post whilst on a Vespa ride in the dense and lush waterside forests of the Olympic Penninsula. Okay, there, I tried some “Steve Williams descriptive phraseology!” Thanks again for the thoughtful words and perspective. And, I agree, a book of your photos would be the best way for us unable to attend. Knock it out of the park!

Hah! Steve Williams phraseology. That’s a new one.

I hope to produce a book at some point. I’ve produced a few weak outlines of what I would like it to be but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. Anxious to see how the non-riding public responds to the photos.

On an unrelated note — I’ve had no more encounters with the ghost at Duffy’s Tavern. I do have frequent encounters with their chickens though who wander freely the streets of Boalsburg. My dog is mesmerized by them.

Good luck, put one foot infant of the other, I wish I could come see the show in person. Most of all have fun!

It’s kind of neat to go through all the images. A trip down memory lane. Thanks for the vote of confidence. As always it’s appreciated.

As a veteran of a lot of years of misspent time doing theater work, I’m pretty sure the gallery equivalent of a show opening would be “break a lens”.

So here’s hoping you bust your Zeiss on the opening.

That really doesn’t sound that good….but it is well intended.

I hope I don’t bust a Zeiss. Or a Rodenstock, Nikon or Fujinon.

Thanks for the words of support though!

I’ll be riding in on two wheels to go to your show. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend your Grand Opening.

And when is your Opening, and where? TIA!

The opening is on Friday, August 3, from 5 to 8pm at the Art Alliance Gallery Downtown in State College, PA. The gallery is in the Martin Luther King Plaza next to the Fraser Street Garage. Right next to Duck Donuts!

Exciting times! That really is a great announcement shot. I’m excited for you.

How do chickens mesmerize dogs? I would think they’d go nuts and want to chase them. Although my dogs tend to freeze when they see potential prey and go into stealth mode, walking VERY slowly and quietly toward the subject of their attention.

Chickens mesmerize Junior by freely walking by him unconcerned with his presence. Sort of puts him in a trance to see this strange creature moving by. He’s quite polite out in public when it comes to critters. If they were on his turf…. I hesitate to think what might happen.

Steve, that poster is excellent and I can’t wait for the show even though I won’t be able to see it in person. Any more thought on a virtual peek at the show? And +1 on the book idea too!

I’ll post an online version of the show sometime in mid-August. So you’ll have a chance to see what was on the walls along with a look at the gallery installation. Not sure how I’ll do that yet but I’ll think of something!

A book is next. Just needed to get the show done first.

That poster is superb. Worthwhile having it framed. Would it be possible to purchase a copy of the poster? In years past special events in large cities all over the world published their large often colour advertising posters. Over the years many of those same posters evolved into art; framed art, placed on walls in medical offices and residences as well as elsewhere.
Your poster is not enormous, more of a simple poster. Still worthy of a frame,
still worthy of retention for the sake of posterity!

Thanks Bryce. The “poster” is really just a small announcement card quick printed at the local Fedex store. I considered a large poster but there’s really no options in State College for such things. Not like you see in cities. Everything is pretty tightly controlled. Even on campus. I have some 8.5×11 ones but they are a completely different layout and design.

I’ll have to think about framing something. Just never have done that with my stuff. Things get stuffed in a box and wait for mice to eat them…

One of the 8.5 x 11 posters would be lovely.
Yes, as I am unavailable to attend your presentation
better to have the framed by me larger poster.

Have sent you my postal mailing address under separate cover
        as you requested.

And here too, hot and humid at least until after the two national
holidays July 1 and July 4 this present week. Hopefully less
heat and humidity by week’s end.

I’ll get it on it’s way in the next day or so. Don’t get too excited. It’s far more impressive in the mind than in reality…

Hot here for more days. And then the inevitable afternoon thunderstorms to provide more moisture in the air with no relief from the heat.
