Announcing a Scooter in the Sticks Photography Show
In 63 days there’ll be an opening reception for my photography show at the Art Alliance Gallery Downtown in State College, Pennsylvania. It will take place on Friday, August 3, from 5 to 8pm. The show will run from August 3 – 26.
For more details and information (maps, hours, etc.) visit the gallery announcement for the Scooter in the Sticks show.
There. I’ve announced it. I can’t take it back now and really do need to finalize the image selection and start printing. Or order printing. Or figure out how I’m going to bring this all together. When I first agreed to do the show I had over 300 days to work. I’m happy to report my skills at procrastination are alive and well.
The last time I’ve engaged in putting together a collection of this sort was when I did my MFA thesis exhibit 12 years ago. Everything was shot on film and printed on gelatin silver print in my darkroom in the basement. Thousands of photographs were made using a Leica M6 and Zone VI field camera. I didn’t have arthritis yet or suffered a heart attack. Scooter in the Sticks was only a few months old and no one was looking or commenting. Things were just rolling along.
There was a quote at the end of the post about something I was working on:
As I continue working I feel a project emerging from my riding. I just don’t know yet what it is….
Now I know what it is. And in August you will too.
Mark your calendars. I hope you can visit. Look for future posts as I move along in the work.
RichardM says
Fantastic! Though, it’s a bit out of the way for us to visit. Are you going to set up a virtual show on another web site?
Steve Williams says
I’m going to try and put something together that reflects the show. WordPress, at least at the level I use it, doesn’t make it easy. I’ll figure out something to run when the show opens.
Brad says
I look forward to it!
Steve Williams says
Me too. I’m starting to sweat.
Ken Day says
Ah, I completely sympathise with the procrastination part 🙁
Sounds wonderful Steve. If only that pesky Atlantic ocean wants in the way 🙂
All the very best.
Ken
Steve Williams says
Yeah, procrastination is a constant battle. But I’ll much along and get the show hung.
I’ve seen pictures of scooters powering a pontoon setup. Not sure they would make it across the Atlantic Ocean though!
Ken Day says
* wasn’t
David says
Well, I’ve made the trip twice, and it’s just a little 10 hour joyride….
Steve Williams says
After all your study and legal testing, maybe a joyride is just what you need!
Douglas Sandmeyer says
Great News Steve. Sounds like an excellent reason for a road trip.
Doug
Steve Williams says
Road trips! Always a good choice.
Mark says
Well, let’s see, that’s about a 3 hrs ridea on a GT250. Possible……
Steve Williams says
Three hours on a Vespa is a leisurely event. Hope you can make the trip.
Mike D says
Congratulations! I know it will be great. I am also glad to know that I’m am not the only great procrastinator. Now try not to let the need for absolute perfection kick in……Maybe I should have left that part out?
Steve Williams says
The idea of perfection trips me up even through I’m not much of a perfectionist. Very weird.
domingo chang says
I’m sure it’ll be a visually outstanding exhibit that will leave viewers with an irresistible urge to go and get their own Vespa for their own rides….
I echo RichardM’s question re whether a virtual gallery site will be posted….
Steve Williams says
While the images will depict a scooter, I’m hoping to leave viewers with the idea that there are other options for slowing down. If they choose a Vespa that’s fine. But it could be a URAL as well…
I’ll post something that will provide an idea of what you would see at the gallery. I have a couple months to sort that out.
Curvyroads says
Congratulations on the upcoming show! X3 on the request for a “virtual view” of your show!
Oh and I resemble that procrastination remark. ?
Steve Williams says
Virtual gallery, check.
I’ll have to start a series on procrastination. Or change the name of the blog to Procrastinator in the Sticks.
BWB (amateriat) says
Hmm…yep a bit if a ride, maybe have to do it as an overnighter. But, damnit, I want to see this.
Calendar marked!
Steve Williams says
It is a long ride for you. And a bit of traffic before you get to the idyllic sticks. But might just be the adventure you’re after!
Dave from Santa Cruz says
Congratulations! I’m genuinely sorry I’m 2,000+ miles away (beyond my range for the GTS). Would love to attend. I’m certain it’ll be a success.
Steve Williams says
You are a long way from here. Would be like running the Scooter Cannonball to get here.
Kathy says
Very cool!!! I’ll have to take a hard look at my schedule. ?
Steve Williams says
If you’re not able to swing up this way there will be some sort of virtual exhibit.
SonjaM says
I won’t be able to visit but I keep my fingers cross for success. Hoping for said virtual exhibit at one point. Good Luck, Steve.
Steve Williams says
Thanks Sonja. Success…. not exactly sure what that would be. I suppose if people see the exhibit and leave feeling a little different about riding and how they view the world — that would be success. Though I have to admit, at this point, just getting the images ready to hang on the wall would be success!

If I can get the week of August 18th off I am thinking of doing an Iron Butt to check out my new-to-me scooter’s credentials. It turns out Niagara Falls is 1500+ miles from home and I’ve never been. That would put me in State College around Sunday night 19th of August. If I get the time off. Are you available for breakfast and a ride Monday morning August 20th? Then I’ll go check the pictures and leave in the afternoon. We are a bit short staffed at work so getting leave may be tricky. The Burgman is ready for the test.
Steve Williams says
An Iron Butt on your Burgman 200. That’s an adventure — for mind and body! Would be great to finally meet you in person. Let me know how things develop so I can make sure everything is in order here!
Noel LaFortune says
Doggone it! We will be in your area, but leaving for home July 11th. Wish I’d known about this sooner…I’d have changed our plans (smile!)
Steve Williams says
Hah. No need. I’ll share some sort of virtual experience in August. You’ll get the flavor of the show.
Bryce Lee says
You have made for yourself a deadline. Perhaps not unusual given your employment history. Getting layouts and the like approved, checked and rechecked and then running one copy just to see if there are errors.
The photography exhibit will not doubt be equally vexing, for time restraints and ensuring everything is “just right.” Hanging the framed images can also be trying, Paul Ruby has experience there. No doubt this exhibit is partly Paul’s doing?
My concern if I was able to attend would be crossing the international border into a country whose politics are less than friendly to foreign powers these days. Ironically this past weekend numerous license plates were seen locally; as the head office for IKEA is within walking distance from my residence. License plates from New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio as well as elsewhere. Given the favourable exchange on the US greenback to the Canadian Loonie, understandable.
I shall circle the exhibition dates however make no promises.
In the interim continue riding, preparation will be increasingly hectic the closer to the actual opening.
Incidentally your motorcycle neighbour’s “Tuesday evening” get together should be soon on the agenda; post some notes there of your upcoming exhibit?
Outside this June 4 morning it is a cool 60 degrees F, and bright…time for a ride maybe?
Steve Williams says
Yes, I seem to function better with real deadlines. I suspect you’re correct regarding my employment history — I was always adhering to an organizational deadline and didn’t often set my own agenda as I do now. An agenda of sloth it seems.
The exhibit is all Paul’s fault. Or at least that’s the theory bouncing in my head. But I appreciate the prodding. It will change how I do things. Already I’ve gone through all my Scooter in the Sticks RAW files, consolidated them from eight external drives onto one master drive and have that backed up to an external drive. And shortly that will be backed up to a second drive to be stored off site.
Not sure what crossing the border is like. Can’t imagine it’s a whole lot different generally. I can’t do it. Need to get my passport renewed. Can’t even get on an airplane now with my PA license for domestic flights. Pennsylvania’s ID does not meet the federal Real ID requirement. So you need a passport to board a plane. Can’t imagine how many people show up at the gate to learn that lesson.
Don’t worry about making the long trip to see the show. I’ll create a virtual experience for those readers harkening from afar.
I’ve still been riding though must confess a terrible choice yesterday. Left the scooter in the garage while the driveway was being sealcoated. So now it’s trapped their until Thursday afternoon. Oh well, as Kim would say, “Work on your show stupid.” Or something like that in a loving tone.
Good idea about the Moto Hang. I’ll get something ready to hang at the Moto Shack. It’s tonight!
Steve Brooke says
Would love to see some of your images in the flesh Steve ? Perhaps a three day loop out of Ontario? A stop at the Willows Inn in Sinnamahoning for lunch on the way down, couple of nights at the Stevens, stroll to Saints for our morning brew, Brekky next door at least once! Oh the possibilities and never mind those roads and the deep dark cool of Central PA summer woods. Shirley and I will give you a heads up if we head in that direction. We do attend the Finger Lakes Rally Labour Day weekend but alas your done by then so we have no choice but to RIDE ?
