Boalsburg Moto Hang
At 3am my mind wanders. Should be sleeping. A rise for a drink of what has the brain turning again and creating a mental checklist of things to do and others to avoid. The joys of thoughts in the middle of the night. Today is the Boalsburg Moto Hang — this episode being hosted by Kissell Motorsports in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Rode down there yesterday. Suppose another ride today makes sense.
My dog Junior attended the last Moto Hang. He tolerates the event though truth be told he would rather be walking than forced to socialize.
Near Tyrone, Pennsylvania
Along the railroad tracks on a damp morning ride through Tyrone. Yesterday morning. Was fortunate to be riding after the rain passed. Temperature moderated a bit from what felt to me furnace like air over the weekend. There’s a reason I don’t ride as much in the summer. Heat. Add that to increasing disillusionment with cold and I wonder if there’s many days of riding in the comfort zone of 55F to 75F. Turning into a whining rider in my old age.
But still I ride — hot or cold — because it’s some damn much fun. But the complaining — what’s that all about?
Vespa in the Desert
The scene near Seven Stars, Pennsylvania startled me. It looked as hot as the air felt. A mini desert scene in the lush agricultural landscape of central Pennsylvania. You can see the heat. But you can’t appreciate the strong fragrance of liquid cow manure courtesy of one of the largest dairy herds in this part of the state. Anyway, it’s late and my brain has slowed a bit. Fatigue is taking hold as I sense my fingers having trouble touching the correct keys on the laptop.
And thinking about riding, or lack thereof, I realize most of my time has been spent preparing for my photography exhibit that I’ll have to hang in 40 days. All the images have been selected and printing is underway.
It’s exciting. It’s a pain in the ass. I’m glad I’m doing it. I hate having to do it. Just another day in paradise at 3:17am…
Dom Chang says
Old age is not for the weak Steve, bitching is OK, you’re still riding!
Steve Williams says
I try and moderate my whining and complaining. But I also need to be honest about it lest it fester in the hidden recesses of my mind where it may play mischief…
Robert says
What Chang said.
Steve Williams says
I pushed the like button Robert. But nothing happened.
Doug says
Great desert scene. Is that a palm in the distance? Hard to believe that’s near you. Really I don’t think I’ve ever seen a farmscape like that.
Diug
Steve Williams says
It’s a big oak tree I think. That particular field is striking at all times of the year. It’s in a perfect place for photography. The bright sun along with the scorched look to the soil makes it really look out of place for central Pennsylvania.
Bryce Lee says
Was getting a wee bit concerned as there was an unusual gap between postings. Know of the photo exhibit; trust all goes well. Was thinking maybe Kim was becoming more active and she is progressing. And then you lay a photo of Junior on us.
Junior never seems to change, a faithful companion following you to the Moto Hang.
First day of summer happening this week along with the longest daylight of the year. Then it all starts to go downhill towards winter.
The photography is keeping you occupied; what better excuse to go riding? However 3:17 in the wee small hours of the morning? Been there, done that
and can well understand how one’s body reacts to changes. No doubt the dogs welcome
a early day break to do their thing; you too.
Ain’t aging wonderful?
Steve Williams says
Busy, lazy, tired, distracted. Hence no posts. Still riding, shooting pictures and making notes. Just haven’t gotten around to doing anything with that raw material.
Junior is a magical beast. The little I know of Game of Thrones — he is my Dire Wolf.
Working on my show. Printing underway. Looked at a test print for one of the 40×60 inch prints. Amazing what technology can do to print from a point and shoot camera file.
As far as aging — I remain open and accepting. And recognize the changes and the need to adapt. I just hope those adaptations remain slow and easy…
Floyd Jasinski says
How about some cheese with your wine! Haha. Talking about heat, how about scooting along when it’s 100 plus degees in the Sacramento area. One would think an open face helmet would be refreshing in that heat, but a full face (modular) with the shield down is actually better. It keeps that blast furnace of heat off your face. Looking so forward to hearing more about your photo exhibit. If it was so easy, anyone could do it!
Cheers!
Steve Williams says
I can’t bear to ride in that kind of heat. I’ve done it but geez it’s far less fun than sub-freezing temperatures.
Working on the show. Will post some updates as I move along. It’s an interesting process for me.

desert scene is a fantastic spray job of glyphosate on & old hay field, Just saying.
From Old Guy to another Old Guy
Steve Williams says
You know better than most what happens to those fields Mike. And there is a lot of liquid manure in that soil. It’s intense agriculture for sure. Usually corn is growing here. Not sure what they are doing this year.
K Hickok says
Whatever the time, we all appreciate your being out in the cloud! Best wishes to you and Kim.
Steve Williams says
Thanks! Keep moving on putting one foot in front of the other. At least until I get onto the Vespa. Then it’s one mile after another…

From a just-about-as-old-guy: your last sentence nailed the creative process rather nicely. Age has relatively little to do about it. (Or maybe more than I think: I’ve griped about this since I turned 40.)
Looking forward to that exhibit. Also plotting my Moto Hang visit, which as discussed will have to be an overnighter, since I’m pretty sure 200+mi in each direction is probably more than I should show off in one go. We’ll see how things work!
Steve Williams says
Creative processes I’ve come to accept are different for everyone. Learning to accept mine, however broken, has taken a long time.
Riding up to see the show would be a big trip. Maybe you should find a venue for me to show the work down your way!
Miguel Tejada-Flores says
The desert photo is striking. But the portrait-of-the-day award goes to your photograph of Junior: he manages to be patient, inquisitive, and mildly amused by both the world around him and the photographer in front of him. Nice writing, too 😉
Steve Williams says
Junior is a fine subject. He reflects a lot of what I feel about things. The “desert” photo is one of those pictures that lie and tell the truth at the same time. Like most pictures. A lot of context missing from the photo itself. But the place is there. I stop almost every time I pass it and make a photograph.
RichardM says
I don’t think I would be very coherent at 3:17am. Maybe just random characters on the page and definitely no pictures. Nice desert in PA photo! I’m surprised there is someplace that looks like that in June.
Steve Williams says
It may be the only place in Pennsylvania that looks like that. I can’t recall another right now.
3:17am. Unusual now. When I was younger, much younger, college age, I was still out in the world at that hour. No wonder my grades suffered…
