In Boalsburg, Pennsylvania at Kelly’s Steak and Seafood. On the roof to me more precise.
It’s also where the Vespa stopped this evening on the way home from work to pick up a couple prime rib sandwiches at the bar. The same bar that 40 years ago saw a guy throw a dead groundhog on to show off a particularly large example he acquired while hunting. Back then it was the Boalsburg Steakhouse and quite a bit different than it is today. It had a unique mix of local color in the bar.
The big Hereford steer on the roof was the same but that’s about all. Kelly’s is definitely upscale in comparison and the food is much better.
And I seem to remember that instead of a Vespa scooter in the parking lot I would have been leaving behind an orange 1970 Volkswagen Beetle. I suppose everyone has places they go that the minute you arrive you feel the sweep of time. For me, this place does it and I feel the pangs of nostalgia as I face the sudden reminder of the sweep of time.
Where has it gone…
Jim Zeiser says
I hear the Steve. All of us had VW Beetles at one time or another back then. Mine was 1963 example with a sun roof. I didn’t do bars, dirt bikes kept my funds low but dates consisted of weekly trips to Sizzler, a steak house chain in Metro New York.

My dad had a ’59 Beetle convertible. And a ’62 at some point as well. My ’70 Beetle had a sunroof. I loved that car. And remembered it as a tight, well performing machine. A few years ago I got to drive one and thought, “Many this is junk.”. These modern cars have wrecked me. Same with the vintage Vespa scooters…

I can still picture the old stake house interior. It was where my parents, up from the Philly area, took me to celebrate my undergraduate graduation, and my pending graduate appointment in the College of the Liberal arts.

The Boalsburg Steakhouse was a destination for a long time. Duffy’s, Eutaw House, and the Tavern were the others. So many places in State College have vanished. I should make a list…
Steve Baird says
I remember the old Boalsburg Steak House very well, although I have not been in the town since 1957. So glad to see that it’s still in operation, albeit under new ownership and improved. IIRC the building was grey with red trim back in those days.
Steve Williams says
I think you’re right about the red trim. Building might have been beige, maybe grey. Can’t remember that. 1957 is a long time to be gone. You wouldn’t recognize the place now…

I want that Vespa of yours! It stops and picks up sandwiches. Perfect! Mine never got to that point of refinement. So sad! 🙂
Steve Williams says
It takes patient training and nurturing. No, wait, my wife trained me to pick up sandwiches…
Melu says
Yes, I’m trying to do that with my husband, too 🙂
Steve Williams says
Good luck with the training. Start slow and offer plenty of rewards!
dom says
mmmmm, prime rib sandwiches…..
Steve Williams says
They’re one of my occasional guilty pleasures now…
RichardM says
I avoided the “pangs of nostalgia” by moving far away. And, I suspect that I won’t remember much from 40 years ago.
No VW Beetle either. Too exotic…
Steve Williams says
You might be surprised what you remember…
The Beetle was sort of exotic for that time, at least in working class neighborhoods. My mom always wanted a Porsche and dad wanted a Mercedes 280 SL Roadster. Neither got what they wanted, even when they could afford it. Dad always wasted his money on big stupid pickup trucks…

Most of the steak hoises from my college days are long gone. But the are a few standoits that stood the test of time.
If you ever come to Montreal there’s Moishe’s on the Maine, and Gibby’s in Old Montreal.
