Released, Relaxed and Sated

March 15, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 9 Comments

Fading snow and warmer temperatures signal the end of winter, more riding and a general recession of the gloom inside my head.  The other morning on the way to work 38F felt positively tropical and my thoughts turned towards longer rides.

The phenomena finds Kim and I outdoors more as well with her working a camera and me wandering on foot and drinking in the world.  I admire her focused attention with a camera.  We work differently and while I may be more technically experienced I cannot match her keen eye.  I see what is familiar.  She explores what is not.

As the snow melts and the thaw works its way through the valley a wet fog develops that paints a mysterious picture.  When I used to work with a large format camera this was the weather I lived for, packing my gear and driving off to chase it.  There are storm chasers, I was a gloom chaser.

This evening, late, a craving swept over me.  Not for riding but for sugar.  Chocolate.  A compulsive companion since I was a kid and would walk to the local general store with a nickel in my pocket to buy a Hershey bar.

And now I ride with dollars in my pocket to find the holy grail — the small pack of little chocolate donuts, waxy little rings of fatty sugar infused goodness.  The local convenience store glows with the promise of satisfaction as the Vespa resists the pull.  But I don’t, seeking satisfaction and relief that only a dose of junk food can deliver.

And now I can rest, released, relaxed and sated…

I really like the shot of the tree branches framed in the overcast sky….I’ve always sought and found the symmetry of tree branches….capturing it is another story.

Charlie6: I love photographing trees but like you say capturing them is a challenge. With this one, it just presents itself in a perfect place.

4×5/8×10 yes. Definitely following the gloom. There is something about large format, a formal measured progression, simple yet required steps to ensure a proper image. And remember to remove the slide before exposure and push it back in after the exposure. Have forgotten to do both at times.
Now as this chocolate craving.. You’re not pregnant however Hershey’s chocolate just somehow doesn’t taste like the Hershey’s of old. Too many artificial ingredients methinks now constitute what we would term chocolate.

Look for an simple old style chocolate shop which produces unadulterated chocolate; how about
that sweet shop you frequented in Tyrone? Although that’s a bit of a haul on the Vespa this time of year. Keep trying, a sweet tooth is an all conuming affliction, enjoy!

The chocolate addiction I can sort of understand but boxes of tiny donuts!? I think the Winter doom and gloom has affected your thinking…

But not your photography (though you did forget to position the Vespa next to the tree).

I love how you described those donuts. Heck, I love how you describe everything. This thing is so artful and personal, I really dig it. Always so good, Steve…

I am glad the gloom is fading away and the promise of spring is on the horizon. I have found myself on the back of my bike or scoot more than once on the quest for chocolate, but not chocolate donuts. We have a Tim Horton’s donut & coffee shop less than a 2 minute walk from my house, I just pretend it isn’t there because I love the Canadian Maple ones. Are those little chocolate ones that are in the cellophane packages?

Love the pic of the tree!
