Learning to Ride, Choosing to Eat — The Unionville Cafe

September 26, 2013 by Scooter in the Sticks 15 Comments

My youngest daughter recently acquired her motorcycle license and the rights and privileges attendant to it — like having to invest in the global petrochemical cartel. Her Yamaha Vino sips fuel but the tank eventually wants more.

On the bright side, Aleta is experiencing the freedom a scooter can offer.  And the food.

Aleta joined Paul Ruby and I on a Saturday morning ritual — riding and eating.  Part of the lesson is becoming comfortable on the road whether by yourself, with a big motorcycle, or with other riders.  In this case Paul and I were probably the biggest challenge for her.

For a beginning rider one can’t ask for more than what’s available here.  Light traffic, reasonable road surfaces, and plenty of twists and turns to practice what you learn in and MSF course.

I suspect Aleta will attain character status on Scooter in the Sticks if she continues to ride.  I’ll have to think about a name.  Flash doesn’t seem quite right.  Neither does Twisty.  I suppose Aleta will suffice for now.

Upon arrival in Unionville, Pennsylvania — a 20 mile jaunt from home; just enough time to feel like you had a ride, eat, and get home to take on a day of chores.  Pretty good deal in my mind.

Paul and I have eaten breakfast here a few times but it was the first for Aleta.  Once she gets the hang of things I expect she’ll be choosing the routes and eateries.  There are a lot of vegetarian cookbooks in her house.

Fearful about the future of my bacon and eggs lifestyle…

Hey Steve – question for you. What tires are you running in warm weather? I’m getting tired of replacing Pirellis. Read good things about the Continental Zippy, but people say they’re a bit slick.

That’s great that your daughter Aleta is riding with you! Though the picture of the two scoots at one pump station begs the question: who paid for the fillup? 🙂

I suspect I know the answer.

Steve is her vino a 125? Love the raspberry colour and I would have killed to have that instead of the blue. I am sure she will love scooting and you two will enjoy many miles and breakies together. Have fun! She may want to check out Scooterdiva.com or TwoWheelFemales.com great web sites for female riders.

Steve, your daughter looks at you the way my daughter looks at me.

If only I knew what it meant.

I know what I like to think it means.

    Steve,

I have been reading your blog for quite a long time. I have just gone back to riding a scooter and thought I would do a “down under” version/immitation/faux version of your blog starting with my return to scooter riding.

I live in Batemans Bay, NSW, Australia and the URL for my blog is http://peterandersonandco.blogspot.com.au/

Any thoughts or views would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Peter

Mark Myers: I’ve been running Kenda 413 tires for the past couple years. They are inexpensive, perform well, and last longer than others I have used. Keep in mind I am not an aggressive rider who is going to notice the subtle differences in cornering ability and stickiness.

In the past the I’ve used Avons, Pirelli, Sava, Continental Zippy, and Michellin. The only one that stood out as being “different’ were the Pirelli tires. Felt really smooth over time and sticky. But in the end I went with the Kenda tires because they were economical.

Charlie6 (Dom): Can’t remember who paid but the two gallons of fuel between us doesn’t amount to much!

bob skoot: She doesn’t shoot pictures. Yet.

And I have no hand me downs. I use my cameras into the ground getting a new one when the other is dead…

Dar: Yes, Aleta has the 125cc Vino. It’s a pretty scooter. I look forward to many more rides together.

I’ll share the two sites with her if she doesn’t see it right away here.

    Thanks!

David Masse: I think she’s thinking — “Don’t you have enough pictures already???”

Maybe she’ll comment and enlighten us.

Peter Anderson: Thanks for the kind words about Scooter in the Sticks. I’m glad it may have played a part in you starting your own blog. I hope you find the same kind of satisfaction as I have from the process.

Visited your blog and saw your new Honda scooter. It’s a beautiful machine. I’ll have to follow your adventures there.

Your first post outlines where you hope to take the blog. If it is anything like my own journey it will continually change. For me, that’s part of the attraction.

Good luck with the new scooter!

Bryce Lee: The Leica M6 is still alive and well. My darkroom is the problem. Once I make the plumbing repairs I’ll be back in business. I wonder though if my hesitation in making those repairs signals that I no longer want to shoot film….
