Admit it — you dream of riding to Alaska. The isolation, solitude and wilderness haunt your dreams. One hundred miles of gravel after lunch just means dinner will taste all the better. Even if it comes from a can cooked over a small fire along the road.
You can sample a taste of this life on Wednesday evening, April 6, at 7pm in the Outreach Building at Penn State. Kissell Motorsports in conjunction with coolBLUE has brought Brenden Anders from MotoQuest to town to give a presentation on the riding opportunities they offer around the world and answer any questions you might have.
This is Brenden Anders and he’s doing what I wish I had the good sense to do when I was 23. Looking at that pretty Kawasaki KLR650 reminds me that Kissell Motorsports has a similar one in their showroom. Actually it belonged to a friend of mine, a fellow photographer at Penn State. But I digress…
I’m anxious to listen to the experiences Brenden has had on the road and how a MotoQuest tour might fit into my future. A look at their website reveals a wide range of opportunities for just about any riding taste. I’m still trying to picture a Vespa in Alaska.
Even if you can’t make it to the event visit the MotoQuest site and register in their drawing for an Alaska trip.
A guy can dream right??

Thanks for posting that. It would sure be cool to win! If I do, I’ll let you know. Or should I just keep my mouth shut? 🙂

No, I think I would rather to ride to Newfoundland then to New England.

You can catch an Alaska Ferry in Bellingham and take it to Prince Rupert, B.C. British Columbia is really long, north to south. You still get to ride through the Yukon Territory and pick up the Alaska Highway to Fairbanks. A friend has talked about doing this on her Stella…

Steve, so you get that Beemer Airhead GS or equivalent lined up, I get the V-Strom Hack sorted out….Alaska is just a few thousand miles away at that point…..we’ll go visit RichardM and perhaps drag Mr Riepe along.

Steve, This company will arrange a tour anywhere in the world. Maybe we should start planning? My last serious adventure was in 1976 when I hitch hiked around the country for a coupla months. See you later this week. Thanks for the great post and support. Craig Kissell

Too late to pioneer the vespa thing. There was the dude from Clearwater Florida who rode a 200 GT and a recent road report on ADV rider had the author crossing the path of a woman on a 250 GTS…It can be done but I’d rather eat worms than do it on a modern Vespa. For a man of your pateince a P200E would be excellent.
I’m with richardm and would like to see the maritime provinces this summer and I have a nulla osta from my wife…

ToadMama: If you win a trip to Alaska you need to rub it in at every opportunity.
Good luck!
Steve Williams says
RichardM: The Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and New England is definitely a ride to do. One more thing on my list.
Orin: The Alaska Highway on a Stella would be a great ride. I think any Alaska Highway ride would be great!
Steve Williams says
dom: You’re planning big. And having Riepe along would just transform an adventure into an epic odyssey. Two hundred years from now riders would still be talking about it. We would be minor characters though I fear…
Steve Williams says
Craig: I never pictured you as a hitchhiking kind of guy. You are full of surprises. We’ll have to discuss some adventures soon!
Steve Williams says
conchscooter: I think Mike Lynch rode his GT200 to Alaska at least twice. I remember following the first trip — he had to stop and buy some foam and duct tape it to the seat because his butt hurt so bad. And that was on the way up!
So what is it that has you so riled about the modern Vespa machines. Your service troubles have poisoned your soul. I’ve heard similar tales of woe about every kind of machine from Hondas to Triumphs.
My Vespa has been flawless. And I am prepared for a loose throttle body.
You need to let this go. Otherwise you’ll just end up a twisted, bitter Triumph rider until you go off the deep and and buy a BMW.

Of course the Vespa can do Alaska. Take a gander at Dot’s adventures: Sydney to London on a moped call Dot.
Enjoy the presentation. Wish I could attend. Take notes please! 🙂

Steve, although you’re right in that we’d be minor characters….we’d still be part of the saga!

And it’s really only half a dozen easy days. Just going to Alaska is relatively easy. It’s the Inuvik and Prudhoe parts that are more challenging. But most people don’t do those roads….
So when should I expect you?
