Denver by Pavement

March 25, 2011 by Scooter in the Sticks 13 Comments

Friday morning and things are beginning to blur. My brain can only absorb so much information. Copious notes and a rewrite on Monday when I’m back at the office will allow a more thorough reflection on the week.

Views from almost every window of the hotel seem to reveal another odd view of Denver. The weather has been wonderful. Snow back in Pennsylvania. It has to be gone by the time my plane lands.

A walk after the conference to let the swirl of the day dissipate. Scooters are everywhere. At 6:30pm the downtown is rather quiet. I could ride my Vespa here.

A last picture before going to dinner. Pegasus reminds me of the sense of power and freedom riding can deliver. Not horsepower — a power of reflection, a recognition of life. On the road, alone, and with my thoughts, I can appreciate what parts of destiny are beyond control and what parts aren’t.

That’s power.

Dear Scooter In The Stick (Steve):

Well, well… Out and about in the big time, huh? Who knew Denver was a scooter town? I just got a note from Charlie6 that you guys are cutting up rough tonight. I understand you may stay up until 10pm! Hot damn!

    Have a good trip!

Dear Mr. Riepe: I am aboard the light rail train to Nine Mile Station where Charlie6 will be meeting me.

Passing by buffalo, cowboys, wild horses and Vespa scooters. Truly the wild west.

Very nice Steve. Please snag some of that nice weather and drag it east with you on your return flight. My scooter is sitting in the garage ready to launch and winter is just refusing to wave the surrender flag.

Dear Scooter In The Sticks (Steve)

“Nine Mile Station” has such a remote and fanciful air about it. One can only wonder what you would find if you went the extra 1,813 yards from that point. I can just imagine you and Charlie6, racing around on Brigitta, his 200-year-old “R” bike, with you sitting on the BMW’s pillion, taking notes.

Thank Heavens it won’t be the Ural, so you won’t have to push it back from the higher elevations. I am looking forward to the pictures.

    Fondest regards,

Dear Mr Riepe….Natasha, the Ural served as the vehicle of choice for our ride into Downtown Denver later that evening and got us home safely I’ll have you know!

Not only that, but Steve learned to ride her after just a few minutes!

There’s a picture, just for you, on my blog…re your “commentary” re our ability to stay up late, thank you very much. : )

    Good riding with you Steve!

ToadMama: Standing by the elevator in the morning and looking out the window the wavy reflection mirrored the way my head felt after several days of information overload at the CASE Editor’s Forum.

David: The weather here in Pennsylvania is much colder than Colorado. Looking ahead towards the end of the week shows snow in the forecast. I can’t stand it.

Dom just wouldn’t part with his milder weather.

Dear Mr. Riepe: My reactions to your comments are too numerous to list here now. I will answer all your questions and address your concerns and ideas when I post soon on the riding adventures in Colorado with Mr. Charlie6.

He revealed a lot about himself. I wondered if he knew I was a journalist? He never once said “off the record”…

Charlie6: You made a good time at the conference a fantastic time in Colorado. Can’t thank you and your family enough for your hospitality.

As far as Mr. Riepe goes — he’s just jealous that he didn’t get to ride in the sidecar. Pay no attention to him.

And I won’t tell him that 10pm is really late for you and that staying up to 11:30 was a red letter event at your house. That will remain our secret.
