My dog Junior, this morning before work, exercising his god given right to chase balls until my hands and feet are numb.
I don’t know how it happened but I suddenly began photographing Junior, well, sort of obsessively with my iPhone, Canon G9, Nikon D200 or D700, Leica M6, Mamiya 7, pretty much with whatever is at hand.
It’s a good thing — making pictures. And with so much snow falling lately the Vespa has been languishing in the garage. I almost made the mistake of riding to work this morning thinking there would be no snow until take today, and then only a short period this morning. Good thing I left the scooter at home.
Back to the My Dog Junior project. I like when something ignites a creative flame. Not sure where it will go. I decided to keep the dog pictures to a minimum. Just enough to soften you all up for a time when one of our daughters has a baby and I start posting pictures like all proud grandpas do.
Probably will fold Junior into the 3 Prints Project which is still moving along despite the fact that I have not posted any updates for a year or so. A long story there and will probably post something soon. Things fall through the cracks and on top of that I procrastinate a bit.
Ask Dave in Canada who is still waiting patiently for a print from last summer’s free print giveaway. Or maybe he forget. I’ll send it. It’s sitting on my desk.
I’ll post an occasional image of Junior here but if you want to see everything visit my Flickr site.
Or if you want daily reminders of the new canine imagery follow me on TWITTER.
That’s a quick update and now I am going to head for the couch…
Jack Riepe says
Dear Steve:
You can never take too many pictures of the dog.
Please be careful with the couch. I had to see the proctologist last week and he was horrified. My ass had taken in the exact imprint of a 72-inch sofa.
A winter such as this is so depressing.

Why is riepe so polite about your mutt and so dismissive of my rescued Lab? I think it has to do with the fact that winters really are better in the land of no seasons. Oops, it’s been 14 hours so it must be time to go for a ride again. The Bonneville awaits!
David Masse says
I’m very polite, and very patient, and forever hopeful. These are things I learned not from my parents or siblings, or my wife, and certainly not from my kids, but from our late, loved, and sorely missed Golden Retriever, Taylor. So I agree with Jack, you’ll never take enough pictures of Junior.
Warm regards,
David in the frozen white north.

Your white balance is amazing (says the guy whose snow pictures are usually gray because he never remembers to adjust the white balance and bump up the exposure a little).
Steve Williams says
Jack: I’ll test your theory about dog pictures.
Yes. Depressing winter..
Conchscooter: I have pictures of Riepe he doesn’t want posted. So he treats me with respect. My dog too.
Your Bonneville is just like my Vespa. It awaits.
Steve Williams says
David Masse: I’ll try and make the wait worthwhile. It was so much easier having people just pick a print from a pile. Now the pressure is on me to pick the right one.
The dog is lying at my feet. He looks ready for another photo session. The room is dimly lit so it will call for ISO 12500.
Joe: Auto white balance and then just a slight curve adjustment in Photoshop. I had the exposure almost dead on in the camera. The histogram helps a lot when snow is involved.
Orin says
First it was Key West Doggie. Now it’s Doggie in the Sticks.
Since my landlord doesn’t allow pets, I guess I’ll have to stick to writing about scooters. More or less.

Jack Riepe says
Dear Sir:
I’m assuming you are riding these days, with the armor-plated snow tires? The tall trees that offer us great privacy from the neighbors screen the sun from the driveway, and the blocktop is a huge smear of ice. I am resolved to not riding until long after the middle of March.

Orin: The weather has been so bad that I need to do something to purge the creative juices from my brain.
So Junior is a stand in for the Vespa.
Mr. Riepe: While I have been out in the past two weeks riding is sparse. It’s just too bad for me. And I am getting weak and having more trouble with the cold. A friend calls is the sisification of me.
But I will be on the road before March. Even if it is with the scooter laying on its side….
