Vespa Scooter into the Christmas Season

December 7, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 20 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter in front of a festive display of holiday decorationsSigns of the Christmas Season

Passing through town on the way home I noticed a flock of flamingos.  Evidence of the coming yuletide holiday season.  Had to stop for a picture though I’m not certain why exactly.  Perhaps it’s the color.  I have a mountain bike that’s the same color as those birds.

Salmon.  Not pink…

Not sure how much riding I’ll get in before the holidays.  At the end of the week I supposed to drop the Vespa off at a local body shop to have the rust and corrosion from many winters of salty riding taken care of.  They say that will take two weeks.  Could be the next time I’m on the road I may run into Santa Claus.

Ho ho ho…

How Do I Decide to Ride the Scooter in Cold Weather?

November 19, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 17 Comments

frost on a car windshieldIce in the Morning

It’s been getting colder the past few mornings. The cars are coated with frost, subtle reminders of the ice and snow to come. It’s been cold enough that my body and mind strive against each in consideration of a chilly ride to work.

If you’ve ever wondered how a decision is made to climb aboard the Vespa when the thermometer nears the freezing mark, here’s a short reflection of my own rationalizations.

I starts almost the moment I wake. Eyes open, body slowly unwinding in slow stretches and groans, a physical coming back to life that leads to a dim assessment of, “How do I feel?”.

From there the mental ramp up begins. My knee-jerk thought is, “I want to ride.”. It’s mindless and without evidence to support it and perhaps similar to a lot of behaviors that are automated but shouldn’t be. It’s at this point that research begins to support or deny a conclusion on whether I will ride or now.

Almost simultaneously I’ll be thumbing the iPhone to my weather app while running costume choices for the ride. Long underwear? Sweater, or perhaps some extra layers? These considerations happen quickly, almost subconsciously.

The show plays a strong role in the process with the steamy water driving away the chill which speaks loudly to choose the car. Aside from serious illness, a hot shower in the morning can almost convince me that anything is possible. It’s a vastly under-appreciated pleasure.

Dog number one joins me in bed as I struggle to pull on polypropylene long underwear and heavy socks. It’s not long before dog number two arrives to nose and nudge me toward decidedly non-riding priorities.

Kim is thrilled we have finally established non-invasive, native bittersweet in our garden, the fiery red berries warm the eyes on a cold morning.

Out the back door and into the morning air for the first time it would not be uncommon to think how nice it would be to drive to work.

The dogs force a morning march to embrace their desire to breathe in the day, send messages to other creatures capable of reading their signs, and celebrate the physicality of being canine. This march is comprised of laps around the yard along a series of walkways and paths of both human and dog construction. One lap comprises an eight of a mile.  In a short time I’ll gain a half-mile of walking in the yard.  I wonder how often others pace their properties.  Our turf turned woodland provides a walk in the woods.

By the time Lily decides to take a break during the walk and ball throwing, I’ve come closer to a decision on whether to ride.  I’ve either become invigorated by the cold or beaten down by it.  On this morning I’m already on the road in my head.

Cold weather riding, scooter or motorcycle, is always made easier by bright sunlight.  On the way to work I stopped along the freeway to soak up some sunshine.  A vitamin D stop. These stops also afford the opportunity to make adjustments to gear to more effectively manage the cold.  Heavier gloves, tightening sleeves to minimize air flow and other weak spots that allow cold air to get to tender skin.

I’m almost always glad I’m riding on a cold day.  The challenge of overcoming the environmental conditions sharpens my senses and imbues a feeling of being in control of my destiny.  If only for a short time.

While I counsel a lot of people to not ride in the cold, especially when the temperature is near or below the freezing mark, I have to admit it is a satisfying experience to overcome the weather.

It won’t be long now until the snow tires go on the Vespa…

Pass Through Time

November 3, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 19 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter on country roadThe Road Ahead

Autumn amplifies my recognition of the passing of time.  It’s more than the visual recognition of leaves changing color and falling to the ground.  It’s a deeper connection to the cycle of life.

I’ve been taking little rides for the past couple months, in part because of the limitations of a slowly healing lower back, and partly because I just don’t have time to ride.  Despite all that, riding in autumn is a lovely experience, heady with the fragrance of drying leaves, lovely for eyes filled with the glowing warmth of light and leaf, and all packaged with the label, “Pass Through Time”.

On the scooter or on foot, the road ahead is taking me somewhere new and I’m loving the ride.

I’m lucky to live in the heart of Pennsylvania’s hardwood forest and the canvas of color it creates this time of year.  The leaf-peeping season doesn’t last long but oh what a show.

A BMW R1200 GS passed me today on the way home from work.  The yellow version from 2007 or so.  I covet that machine from time to time along with a short list of other motorcycles.  But none (yet) have the addictive and overwhelming good feeling of my Vespa GTS scooter.  It’s perfect in many ways and good enough in others.

Will the spell break at some point and allow something different in the garage?

Riding a Vespa, a modern four-stroke version, is just plain magic.

Really.

And I’m not getting paid to say this…

Autumn leavesThe Lure of the Canvas

Along with many other things on a list of “before I die” activities is painting.  Acrylic on canvas.  I want to try my hand as a painter.  Seeing the autumn leaves and the wonderful landscapes of the season triggers the desire.  Perhaps something to do in retirement.

Funny thing about the list, a bucket list I suppose, is there’s really nothing on it pertaining to riding.

What’s that mean?

Vespa GTS scooterRiding to Work

Stopped on the way to work one morning last week to stretch my back that was starting to cramp. Striking a yoga pose while simultaneously grumbling and cursing might create an odd mix for anyone passing by.  Despite the need to sometimes stop I’m grateful to be riding to work.  Every commute is an adventure.  Every adventure is a reminder of the damn great life I have.  Even is it’s just to pass through time.

You experience the nicest thoughts when you’re a rider.

Fear on the Road

October 30, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 5 Comments

But I love Halloween, and I love that feeling: the cold air, the spooky dangers lurking around the corner.
Evan Peters, American Actor

Fall rural landscape with leafless treesLest Imagination Runs Away…

Riding my Vespa scooter through the countryside I began thinking about Halloween.  It didn’t take long for my imagination to begin creating scenarios straight out of the scary stories of my youth yielding a sense of fear on the road.

The healthy, life preserving fear of operating a two-wheeled vehicle, motorcycle or scooter, on the road remained intact.  Respecting, understanding and accepting the risk related to riding and performing accordingly is, at least for me, an essential element of being a competent rider.  But sometimes my imagination runs off…

The bare trees on empty landscape seemed ominous and twinged with foreboding — as if something bad had happened here.  My brain replayed scenes from old horror movies that would leave me spellbound late on a Saturday night as I would watch Bill Cardille’s Chiller Theatre on channel 11 WIIC in Pittsburgh.

Fear, Halloween and being scared was a lovely combination.

The weather has been sublime.  With few physical challenges — cold, rain, snow — both the scooter and my imagination could wander through a pre-Halloween landscape.  I’m surprised how often roads play a part in our collective imagination as places of danger.  Not the obvious traffic related stuff, but instead the pathological to supernatural occurrences.  A few movies that fuel the frightening possibilities of the road:

  • Duel — Steven Spielberg’s 1971 directorial debut featuring a truck that terrorizes a driver on the road.
  • The Car — Eliot Silverstein’s 1977 film of a mysterious car which goes on a murderous rampage, terrorizing residents of a small town.
  • The Road — John Hillcoat’s 2009 film of a father and son braving life on a road through a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
  • Walking Dead — AMC’s zombie series (and cable TV’s all-time most watched series) where you know every time a character heads out on the road something bad is going to happen.

I carry a lot of psychic baggage in my head available quickly to concoct a chilling idea of where the road is leading me.

I wonder if kids today are still watching scary stuff on TV after their parents go to bed…

The ride wasn’t nearly as scary as my imagination might create.  The day was mostly a slow, languorous journey through the fine, warm central Pennsylvania countryside. That’s a fine place to be.

But a rider always needs to be wary of the sudden appearance of a zombie.  Or a witch casting a spell that might cause said rider to trade a magnificent Vespa for a URAL or worse…

Life Tempered by Vespa

Steve Williams portraitCan You Spell Razor?

Seems as if things have gotten to the point where I shave on the weekend.  Work, life, everything piles up to force choices.  Last night someone told me I look like Steve Jobs.  I don’t see it.

I was staring into a 16mm lens when our photographer snapped this picture.  He was reminding me how the camera works as I was recalled to action for a photo assignment.  It wasn’t on my list of things to do when I arrived in my office in the morning but sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

Vespa GTS scooter on a foggy morningQuiet Commute in the Fog

Riding to and from work provides a fantastic opportunity to quiet the mind before the day spins up.  The weather has been warm and misty this week with some lovely fog to ride through.  Just down the street from home I took a moment to take in the sunrise before continuing on to the office.

This scene would look equally nice with a motorcycle.

Senator Tim Kaine at the Berkey CreameryIce Cream at the Penn State Berkey Creamery

Senator Tim Kaine made a campaign stop at Penn State today.  After a speech to students at the Hetzel Union Building he made a quick stop at the Berkey Creamery for some ice cream.  It’s always interesting to observe how these events unfold from the staff and press corps to the work of the Secret Service. I could see a lot of agents and assume there were others that I didn’t.  Security was more intense when Senator Obama was campaigned for President.  And even stricter when I photographed President George W. Bush.  When President Clinton was here there were snipers down the hall from my office.

There’s a lot of energy in these events.  As a photographer, especially one not engaged in the business anymore on a daily basis, the crowded jostling of the press corps is a unique experience as everyone pushes for position. Behind me were a dozen or so photographers, videographers and writers.

New Hampshire’s state motto seems an appropriate life strategy when things get particularly chaotic.  Riding the scooter can shine a light on what’s important and what’s not.  I still marvel and how easy it is to break life down into the simplest of components.  Live free or die makes total sense.

The warm weather is departing as autumn advances toward winter.  It’s all happening too fast.
