Vespa Scooter into the Christmas Season

December 7, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 20 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter in front of a festive display of holiday decorationsSigns of the Christmas Season

Passing through town on the way home I noticed a flock of flamingos.  Evidence of the coming yuletide holiday season.  Had to stop for a picture though I’m not certain why exactly.  Perhaps it’s the color.  I have a mountain bike that’s the same color as those birds.

Salmon.  Not pink…

Not sure how much riding I’ll get in before the holidays.  At the end of the week I supposed to drop the Vespa off at a local body shop to have the rust and corrosion from many winters of salty riding taken care of.  They say that will take two weeks.  Could be the next time I’m on the road I may run into Santa Claus.

Ho ho ho…

Alone on the Road

November 26, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 16 Comments

Black Friday.  Early into town for breakfast with a friend.  Town seems deserted on what is supposed to be one of the busiest retail days of the year. It’s one thing to be alone on the road in the forests and mountains outside of town.  But in town, well, it almost feels creepy to not see anyone.

After breakfast I passed a toy store, Growing Tree Toys, and thought it made sense to browse their wares for something that might interest my granddaughter.  Ducks are high on her list of interests so this fellow joined me for a little ride.

My back wasn’t up to a ride and to be honest, I sort of forced myself to take the scooter out at all.  I have a pack of reasons why I should keep riding but few suggesting I stay off the machine and let my back heal a bit more.  Recovery is slow but moving in the right direction.

I let the Vespa draw me along some forest roads to enjoy the last of autumn before the snow begins to fall.  And on Monday an army of deer hunters will make riding in Pennsylvania forests a bit unnerving — even with a high VIZ jacket on my back.

As transportation the Vespa scooter is outstanding.  It gets from point A to point B without a fuss.  And it’s indifferent to the type of road; comfortable on backroads, freeways or tours across a cornfield.

I don’t know why I keep choosing paths that bump along.  My back is far more pleased with smooth pavement than bouncing around of the road.  I did stop at a local body shop for an estimate to repaint the undercarriage of the scooter.  Many winters of salt and much have made a mess of things.  In a couple weeks I drop it off for a bit of restoration work…

I suspect for most of December I’ll be without the scooter.  Opportunities to be alone on the road may give way to more work on other projects — ones I plan to work on in retirement.  I’m still trying to figure out how that second career will unfold and where my “office” will take shape.  I’ve considered cafes and coffee shops along with the local library.  I’ve also thought about renting an office space somewhere so I’ll have a place to provide some structure to any new endeavors.

For now though, I just keep wandering, alone on the road…

How Do I Decide to Ride the Scooter in Cold Weather?

November 19, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 17 Comments

frost on a car windshieldIce in the Morning

It’s been getting colder the past few mornings. The cars are coated with frost, subtle reminders of the ice and snow to come. It’s been cold enough that my body and mind strive against each in consideration of a chilly ride to work.

If you’ve ever wondered how a decision is made to climb aboard the Vespa when the thermometer nears the freezing mark, here’s a short reflection of my own rationalizations.

I starts almost the moment I wake. Eyes open, body slowly unwinding in slow stretches and groans, a physical coming back to life that leads to a dim assessment of, “How do I feel?”.

From there the mental ramp up begins. My knee-jerk thought is, “I want to ride.”. It’s mindless and without evidence to support it and perhaps similar to a lot of behaviors that are automated but shouldn’t be. It’s at this point that research begins to support or deny a conclusion on whether I will ride or now.

Almost simultaneously I’ll be thumbing the iPhone to my weather app while running costume choices for the ride. Long underwear? Sweater, or perhaps some extra layers? These considerations happen quickly, almost subconsciously.

The show plays a strong role in the process with the steamy water driving away the chill which speaks loudly to choose the car. Aside from serious illness, a hot shower in the morning can almost convince me that anything is possible. It’s a vastly under-appreciated pleasure.

Dog number one joins me in bed as I struggle to pull on polypropylene long underwear and heavy socks. It’s not long before dog number two arrives to nose and nudge me toward decidedly non-riding priorities.

Kim is thrilled we have finally established non-invasive, native bittersweet in our garden, the fiery red berries warm the eyes on a cold morning.

Out the back door and into the morning air for the first time it would not be uncommon to think how nice it would be to drive to work.

The dogs force a morning march to embrace their desire to breathe in the day, send messages to other creatures capable of reading their signs, and celebrate the physicality of being canine. This march is comprised of laps around the yard along a series of walkways and paths of both human and dog construction. One lap comprises an eight of a mile.  In a short time I’ll gain a half-mile of walking in the yard.  I wonder how often others pace their properties.  Our turf turned woodland provides a walk in the woods.

By the time Lily decides to take a break during the walk and ball throwing, I’ve come closer to a decision on whether to ride.  I’ve either become invigorated by the cold or beaten down by it.  On this morning I’m already on the road in my head.

Cold weather riding, scooter or motorcycle, is always made easier by bright sunlight.  On the way to work I stopped along the freeway to soak up some sunshine.  A vitamin D stop. These stops also afford the opportunity to make adjustments to gear to more effectively manage the cold.  Heavier gloves, tightening sleeves to minimize air flow and other weak spots that allow cold air to get to tender skin.

I’m almost always glad I’m riding on a cold day.  The challenge of overcoming the environmental conditions sharpens my senses and imbues a feeling of being in control of my destiny.  If only for a short time.

While I counsel a lot of people to not ride in the cold, especially when the temperature is near or below the freezing mark, I have to admit it is a satisfying experience to overcome the weather.

It won’t be long now until the snow tires go on the Vespa…

Introspection

August 29, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 21 Comments

introspection with Canon G15 camera self-portraitIn the Mirror

After weeks of not riding and grumbling over a some back it’s time to step back and appraise the view.  Introspection isn’t always pleasant but does provide some clues for the journey ahead.  I made a first entry in my journal in a month this morning.  What was once a near daily event has faded, much like the frequent flying on the scooter.

A morning portrait at the Pump Station suggests something other than a happy camper.  Or perhaps the chronic reminder that I have a spine is wearisome.

I gingerly pushed the Vespa on and off the center stand this morning in the driveway before making a final decision to ride into town.  Still can’t make any long trips but it’s nice to ride a few miles.  Remarkably, even that short distance managed to brighten a sullen riding spirit. I wonder why I’m so irritated at not being able to ride?

Another pleasant surprise was the quiet morning.  A surprise because all the students have returned to Penn State.  I guess their first Saturday night wore them all out.

Walking to Saint’s brings me past the shoe repair shop that keeps my riding boots alive.  The soles are getting worn down again so I suspect I’ll be paying a visit soon.  Don’t see many shoe repair places anymore.

Despite not seeing anyone on the street there was amble evidence of activity from the night before.  The fragrance of stale beer floated on the morning air; broken bottles littered a section of the street.

At Saint’s Cafe, my friend Paul was showing off a new digital oscillioscope he built from a kit that will allow him the ability to test old electronic gear.

I think when I ride.  About the road.  About other things.  Often it’s the other things that matter most.  Riding on the Vespa keeps me open to new ideas.  I’ve been a bit miserable not being able to be on the road.  Wasn’t sure it would help to go for a short ride but turns out it’s just pretty much magic.  Blue sky, fine view, scooter ready to take me where I want to go.

I’m just glad the destination isn’t Crazytown…

The Big Pinch

August 23, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 13 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter at a medical facilityMedical Vespa

After a week of no riding, I made my way to a Saturday afternoon visit with a local medical facility to have some blood drawn for tests.  I’ll be visiting my cardiologist for the first time since I had my heart attack last year.  Only makes sense to see how the red stuff is doing in response to changes in living.  Diet – check.  Exercise — check.  Stress reduction — check.  Sleep.  Well, sort of check.

Haven’t ridden since that little jaunt.  Back is still stiff and there’s enough sudden weakness that leaving the Vespa in the garage makes sense.

The only thing noteworthy about the trip was the big pinch.  Sitting in a chair in the lab the phlebotomist had my arm tied off with a piece of rubber tubing, wiping throbbing veins as she scrubbed skin with alcohol, all part of a familiar drill.  And then, as she focused her gaze on the vein she says, “Big pinch”.

Big pinch?  What?  My mind races immediately wondering what is about to happen.  Every other time I’ve had blood drawn they say “Little pinch”.  Little.  As in small, insignificant.

Little pinch.  Not big pinch.

As my mind is racing I see the blood filling glass tubes.  Wait.  What?  That’s no pinch.  Didn”t feel a thing.

After a short interrogation she tells me she doesn’t like to disappoint anyone so she crys, “Big pinch!”.  No one is disappointed when there’s no pinch.

The highlight of my riding week…
