Riding on Warm Nights

May 23, 2018 by Scooter in the Sticks 18 Comments

As the daylight lingers a little longer each day the drastic cooling that takes place in winter and early spring slowly goes away.  And suddenly I realize I’m riding on warm nights.  Completely comfortable physically seems to allow more focused attention on the air — the warmth as it flows across my chest as I ride. It’s also filled with a vast collection of smells and fragrances — honeysuckle and Russian olive flowers perfume the evening air.  And moving across the landscape I can feel the subtle changes in temperature as the Vespa scooter cuts through invisible rivers of air flowing downward across the valley.

A hand clad in thin leather feels the throttle directly, so different than winter with heavily insulated gloves. I feel myself flying, soaring, enjoying every moment of the ride, free from the past six months of battling the cold.

Riding on warm nights.  I feel good.

I feel free.

Search for the Spirit of Christmas

December 25, 2017 by Scooter in the Sticks 38 Comments

It’s late and I’m still searching for the spirit of Christmas. There’s no tree for it to hide under and my heart is worn and tired. Despite the twinkling lights and colorful trappings of the season, Christmas remains elusive.

Writing always helps clear away the noise that can mask the truth. A small collection of chocolate and tea fueled a pen laying ink across a journal; thoughts of life and Christmas on my mind.Continue Reading

Evening Ride

June 14, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 12 Comments

Evening Ride

At 5:04 p.m. an alert vibrated the iPhone sitting on my desk warning of a severe lightning storm and calling for the evacuation of two athletic stadiums on Penn State’s University Park campus.  For once my decision not to ride because of the weather made sense.  Three hours later the weather cleared and the Vespa was fully engaged in an important mission. The line of fire across the sky signified the importance of the task at hand.

Traveling at Dusk

Swift movement at dusk through the central Pennsylvania landscape inspires a heighten sense of risk; Bambi is lurking just beyond the green fringe, waiting to intercept the feckless rider. As missions can push limits it’s important to remain attentive, focused, and bring all skills and powers to the task at hand.

Fragrant Air

Fragrance and fluctuation of air temperature seek to move the mind from the eye to the nose like mythological sirens luring the unsuspecting towards the rocks.  A few words of silent meditation refocuses concentration on the mission at hand, interrupted by the sharp pierce of a mosquito’s proboscis through my cheek.

On the Vespa goes.

Silent and Swift

Only minutes left, moving silently across the parking lot, like a special operator in a hostage rescue, hyper-focused, committed, single-minded.  Moment by moment the number of possible decisions shrink until I’m face-to-face with the target. Time slows as I move like a shadow with singular intent.

Mission Notes

Mission complete, target secure, two pints of fine frozen dessert — Ben and Jerry’s and Talenti — on route to a Friday evening summit with my significant other. It was a productive evening ride.

Even the little trips are fun and full of surprises. Life is always an adventure on two wheels. Life is better with a Vespa scooter.

The Denver Riding Nightlife

March 24, 2011 by Scooter in the Sticks 27 Comments

riding side-saddle on a vintage Vespa scooter at night in Denver

Side-Saddle Denver Riding

I raced across the street in downtown Denver last night to catch these two young women with my iPhone. It’s not often I see anyone riding side saddle on a vintage Vespa.

Two days in Denver and I have not seen a single motorcycle. Lots of scooters though — zipping along on the streets and parked on the sidewalks. Being in the wild west I sort of thought the place was going to be a motorcycle town full of cowboys who had abandoned their horses for Harleys and Triumphs.

Gazing at the Rocky Mountains

Between meetings I have a chance to look out the window at the still snow-covered Rockies in the distance and wish I had an extra week and my Vespa to do some exploring.

Denver at Sunrise

Sunrise in Denver a few minutes ago. Day three in Denver. Life can be simple on the road. Right now the only decisions I have to make is Starbucks or the hotel restaurant for breakfast.
