The Paul Ruby Show

While it may be a shock to my friend Paul Ruby, I’m not surprised he’s managed to pull together a photography exhibition of photographs he’s made of his significant other, Mary Margaret. The show opens tomorrow, Friday, March 2, with an opening reception from 5-8pm at the Art Alliance Gallery Downtown in State College, Pennsylvania.Continue Reading

Tolerance for Noise

March 25, 2016 by Scooter in the Sticks 16 Comments

How much noise is in your life?

Why I Photograph

Dredging through my files I found this old video — a visualization of the kind of stuff I write about now only without a scooter as subject.

Back in 2000 I was in graduate school working on a degree in art and learning to explore my self and the things that motivate me.  After a life of saying (and believing) “My work speaks for itself”, I was pushed to examine, explore, doubt and second guess everything I believed to be true.  Or at least those things related to art and photography. I resisted at first but slowly came to realize the value in understanding what was driving me (or not).

In one class taught by a member of the painting faculty we were challenged to respond and react to a variety of ideas and questions using video — an attempt to expand our ability to think and talk about why we work.  As I thought about photography I began to realize there was little motivation regarding beauty, light or form.  What I found was a method to help strengthen my tolerance for noise — the demands of earning a living be one part of it.

I was doing this before I bought the Vespa scooter and started riding and blogging.  But those things serve the same role now.  Last night I was talking to my wife about this when she asked why I try to do so much.  It’s not that I want to accomplish things — it really is a need to get the noise out of my head.  It builds up, a nervous, sometime frenetic energy that just needs drained like a recurring boil.  Nothing cosmic or romantic — just a terrible aspect of how my brain works.

So the video is a quick reflection of the sort of thing I write about now on Scooter in the Sticks.  We usually had three days to make a video.  Was sort of fun.  While classmates decided to use friends and actors in their videos I always chose myself.  I’m always available, show up on time and don’t complain.

When I’m on a deadline and don’t want any additional aggravation — I ride alone.

Moratorium on Riding — or so it feels…

April 8, 2006 by Scooter in the Sticks 5 Comments

This past week has marks the beginning of a decline in my riding. I’m preparing for graduation. I have been working on a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree as a part-time graduate student for a number of years and at the end of this semester I’ll finally (hopefully) graduate. Between my work schedule, family, and school it feels as if riding is a luxury. I did manage to ride to the meet-up of the Top Secret Scooter Club on Monday. This took place less than a half mile from my home so obviously I had to take the six mile route to get there. It was raining hard when I left and my Gill Raincoast and Tourmaster OverPants worked nicely. I hate to say it but I sort of enjoy riding in the rain….

And of course there were commutes to work too but nothing really exciting took place. Just the joy of riding.

The image posted here I decided to use on the invitation postcard for my MFA Exhibition which opens on April 22. There won’t be any scooter pictures in the exhibit but I really liked the shot so I figured what the hell. One person commented that it looked like I pick my pictures up along the road. I’ve thought about that and there is some truth to it. I certainly find my pictures while traveling whether literally or figuratively–through the world or through life.

Everything in my show will be black and white. Other than the pictures I post here all my work is done on film. The majority of the show will be comprised of images I have made of my wife Kim over the past seven years.

I will also have a small installation of landscape photographs which reflect the world I see through my wandering. As I continue working I feel a project emerging from my riding. I just don’t know yet what it is….
