The Relaxing Nature of Riding a Motorcycle

The Merlin App

At 5:30AM a strange bird woke me. A triplet call, loud yet smooth and calm. Launching the Merlin Bird ID app to life on the iPhone it immediately identified the stranger as a Black-billed Cuckoo. I laid in bed listening. The cool air of a wet morning hinted at fog.

Clouds that touch the ground draw me from bed. The world outside the bedroom window is narrowed by the fog. And a desire is sparked to venture into the unknown.

Sometimes I just need to go for a ride. To clear my head. To rearrange my brain. To remind myself that life is good. But on this morning there were no concerns or hauntings. Just a desire to be riding a motorcycle.

Riding is Magic

November 4, 2021 by Scooter in the Sticks 25 Comments

It’s always a surprise what triggers me to write an essay for Scooter in the Sticks. This time it was dragging the garbage can to the street for pickup and seeing frost on the car.

A magical, foggy morning on the motorcycle.

There are hints that winter is approaching; leaves descending from trees; geese honking overhead; squirrels and chipmunks growing fatter and fatter as they store the peanuts we put out for the birds. And now frost along with a faint bite on skin that rattles awake ancient programming in my DNA that whispers deep in my brain, “you better get ready…”

Those feelings sometimes emerge while riding, especially when conditions turn toward the surreal or become physically challenging. It happened one morning when I was riding the motorcycle into the mountains and encountered fog.

I discovered (again) that riding is magic.

From Gray into the Light

November 1, 2021 by Scooter in the Sticks 36 Comments

Almost two months have passed since my last post to Scooter in the Sticks. Finally, I’ve emerged from gray into the light.

Riding through a foggy morning in Rothrock State Forest.

From time to time, I find myself wandering in a world of doubt, fear, and uncertainty, and everything becomes gray.  At first, I blamed the nagging pandemic and how it affected my life yet a close inspection revealed little change in my daily life.  I’ve been riding my Vespa scooter and BMW motorcycle throughout the summer and into the fall with little concern for what’s happening in the world, pandemic or otherwise.  Still, there is the familiar, comforting rush being on two wheels, my spirit vibrating with excitement and a stupid smile across my face that surely speaks of lunacy.

Yet when I sit down to write about those experiences I quickly descend into a gray abyss where ideas, thoughts, feelings, and memory evaporate.  I face a blank wall. It’s an unsettling landscape without a roadmap or destination.  After a while, I’m left wondering if I will ever emerge from gray into the light.

Without explanation, I wake to find myself standing in the light with something to write.

And there it is, my Vespa GTS scooter on a narrow road leading through Rothrock State Forest on a foggy morning.  The small tires moved smoothly along the gravel, the air full of moisture with the fragrance of leaves, and the feeling of being alive life filled me as I moved through nowhere to nowhere.  I remember that morning now and how it felt to be in the world.

For a while, I wondered if the desire to write had left me.  Numerous rides during the past four months along with many photographs had not triggered a need to write.  My mind was wandering elsewhere.  My body was engaged elsewhere.  Perhaps it was the end.

And then I emerged from gray into the light.

The Dark Thoughts While Riding

August 10, 2020 by Scooter in the Sticks 28 Comments

Reality and Fiction

Early summer morning rides when there’s a hint of fog in the air is a welcome change from the normal occurrence of blue skies and sunlight. There’s a shift in how I respond during a ride and tend to seek less traveled paths. And sometimes that shift opens a door to some of the darker thoughts that simmer in my mind. The dark thoughts while riding.

Most of what I write in regard to riding is positive and reflects the joys and restorative power I find while being on two-wheels. Despite this taking place in the relative safety of civilization in central Pennsylvania, there are times when imagination takes over to create a fictional world.

Thankfully the Vespa is quiet. Quiet enough to hear the roar of the pickup trucks with their loud, rusty exhaust systems. Time enough to vanish from the road and avoid any unfortunate encounters with the marauders and road bandits who’ve grown from the pandemic depression. I remember when I could ride these roads unmolested.

Memories of Spring Riding on a Vespa

April 15, 2020 by Scooter in the Sticks 15 Comments

Riding a Vespa scooter through a burst of spring in rural Pennsylvania is one of my precious pleasures.

Eyes Open While Riding on a Vespa

Walking through a local park with Kim and Junior the bloom of flowers on ornamental trees, the emergence of color on Redbuds, and the sudden, shocking splash of green across the landscape scream Spring. And with it comes memories of my riding on a Vespa scooter through fields and mountains in springs past that cause tremors in my resolve to keep the scooter and motorcycle unused during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I’m grateful for the wonderful memories of past rides and it doesn’t take long to conjure scenes and experiences that cause my imagination to glow.

When I close my eyes and think of spring riding what comes to mind is the warmth and color. Those first rides tell me I can finally stop girding myself for the cold and embrace a different experience. And the broad strokes of green remind me that the world is alive and well. And now during the current pandemic I’m reminded of how fragile we really are as humans and as a civilization.

Nature can slap us down in an instant.
