Autumn Light

November 20, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 12 Comments

Autumn near Galbraith GapJust a few weeks ago autumn was still amidst its fragrant, natural bloom of color and leaf.  Circumstance and schedule largely kept myself and the Vespa indoors engaging other worlds and foes.  But Kim, Junior and I did find a few moments late one afternoon to drink in the spectacle that comes to central Pennsylvania each fall and let the autumn light wash us clean of responsibility and concern, if only for some dazzling minutes.

On the way home from an appointment, the light guided our little car towards Galbraith Gap and a corridor of land recently acquired by the Commonwealth that leads into the mountains.

Long shadows imply a rapid change in the day as the sun plummets toward the horizon.  I’m convinced the transition is faster in autumn and winter.  My camera watched Kim explore as Junior watched me, waiting for a tennis ball to emerge from a pocket.  Funny how attention, human and canine, can be so focused and connected among a group of people.

Kim Dionis, photographer

As the remains of the day began to fade toward dusk I watched as Kim worked with her camera.  She considers me the photographer in the family but that’s purely a one-sided judgement.  In the art world arena she’s sold more photographs than I have.  She shoots more that I do.  And her relentless approach to a subject is dizzying.  I’ve learned much from that approach though must confess I cannot bring the focus of mind or will to bear on any subject.  It remains a goal but I suspect I don’t have the intellect or obsessive capacity for it.

Due to a chronic medical condition her productive time is limited, strangled really, to a few short hours each day.  Some days less.  In any good relationship people find strength in one another.  How those are embodied are different, and for some perhaps unknown.  It’s clear to me though.  I’ve watched Kim struggle with loss and defeat, but she returns over and over in enthusiasm and desire.  In the autumn light I’ve had the chance to witness the soaring of human spirit and be able to say, “Hey, that’s my wife!”.

I hope I can offer something useful in return because Junior just wants fed, played with or another biscuit…

Morning Rain

November 6, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 8 Comments

Vespa GTS scooter on rainy road in forestI’ve sat here staring at this picture for half an hour, wondering how I decided to leave the house on the scooter this morning when the weather was already cold and dreary with a forecast promising even more.  Morning rain holds a power over me that defies logic and shuttles conventional judgement into a mental box shielded from common sense.  Who departs on two wheels in the rain when they have a choice to travel otherwise?

Walking the dog before breakfast I was already categorizing the rain as mist, a minor variation of atmosphere that’s more decorative than substantive. With eyes on the sky, a mottled mix of greys and whites with an occasional glow of light where the sun threatened to show itself, I had decided I was going to ride to work just to see how the light painted the world.

Riding down our road I couldn’t help but notice the low clouds laying across the mountainside or wonder how mysterious the forest roads would be.  The clock had not yet reached 7am when I turned away from work and on towards Rothrock State Forest.

lichen on an oak tree in Rothrock State ForestBoy Scouts, biology students and characters in post-apocalypse movies all know the significance of a lichen on a tree — an indicator of north.  All rugged scooter and motorcycle adventure riders should store this away for the day they’re stranded, alone, in the woods with wolves, bears and zombies about.

What’s not apparent in the picture is the cold.  In my excitement to ride in the rain I neglected to fully evaluate the 42F air mixed with what would become a steady rain.  Factor that with only a black t-shirt under my riding jacket which now has no zipper, only snaps to hold it closed but allowing copious quantities of frigid air to attack not to mention no ability at all to repel moisture anymore.

Still, it was a great day to ride.

Vespa GTS scooter in the rainAt some point while riding in the rain a part of my brain asks, “How miserable do you want to be?”.  It’s one thing to ride in soaking we clothes on the outside, but once the water starts to penetrate towards tender flesh it’s a different ballgame.  I ride a lot in the cold but I do not like being cold.  Lack of attention leads to some painful miles.

There was a moment, very brief, where I considered stopping and putting on the Rev’It rainsuit that lives in the topcase, unopened and unused.  But that would make too much sense.  It’s not raining hard enough yet.

Vespa GTS scooter in the rainDuty calls and I need to ride to work — for real.  It’s 7:30am, I’m wet, cold, and trying to rationalize taking the day off to get wetter and colder.  That’s how my brain works in the morning.  I’m glad I don’t live in a wilderness or I would probably have died along an empty road somewhere long ago.

On the 10 mile ride to the office I can’t stop thinking about how cold my hands are.  The dampness and air seeping through my gloves have reduced my fingers to thick, painful nubs of near numb meat sticks.  There must be a dozen traffic lights between this last photo stop and the office.  At each light I plan to warm my fingers a bit on the headlight, a brief respite from the all to familiar hand torture I go through every season.  And my luck, every light was green save one which provided a mere  15 second tease of head on my left hand as it pushed itself against the headlight.

And so it goes, a ride in morning rain.

Autumn in the Air

October 29, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 7 Comments

Vespa scooter and autumn leavesEverything is moving quickly now — the days, the color change in the leaves, my perception of the passing of time.  I feel autumn in the air but it’s passing fast like clouds in a storm. This morning on the way to work I could not account for the time.  Seems like just yesterday I was sweltering in summer heat and today the leaves are jumping off the trees.  I swear time would slow down if I just rode more often.

Vespa scooter at the Pennsylvania Military MuseumMornings of late have had a strange yellow-orange glow which gives the world a pumpkin colored feeling.  The fragrance of crisp, dead leaves fills the air and stirs memories of family outings and picnics with my parents. Autumn triggers heavy melancholy feelings as my body must know that things are dying, that the process with the leaves is the same for every living thing.

Must be careful not to dwell long in that place.

Vespa scooter and Mt. Nittany

I love the mornings when I get out of bed early enough to ride a lazy course to work, one that allows many stops for thought and pictures.  Mount Nittany hasn’t changed but I have.  Change isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Ag Administration Building at Penn State

The trees outside my office windows (the two on the ground floor-left) are almost finished.  The leaves have moved from verdant green to yellow, orange and red and soon they’ll all succumb to gravity and leaf blowers. The crane lifting new heating and ventilation units onto the roof will be gone soon as well allowing all the scooter and motorcycle riders back to the now cordoned off parking spaces.

Man, I hope this dismal feeling goes away soon.  If I weren’t so tired right now I’d get on the Vespa and try to sweat it out.

Sunlight and Shadows

October 26, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 4 Comments

Vespa scooter in early morning sun

On the road at the right time of say and the sun has a powerful influence on visibility.  I hate it when I’m blinded by a direct beam from the sun or when it’s suddenly reflected from shiny bumpers, windshields or mirrors, and love it when it sweeps low across the world with a hot power that makes me feel everything is as it should be.  Sunlight and shadows provide details and clues about the world.

The sun also helps mitigate the feeling of cold at this time of year.  Fifty degrees in the sun feels balmy compared to how it works on you under a heavy sky.  And as much as I love the look of the light brought on by harsher weather a bit of sunlight is always welcome.

Autumn is rushing past and I’ve not attended to any winter riding preparations either for the machine or myself.  A good cleaning and waxing is in order for the Vespa and I need to replace the zipper on my riding jacket if I hope to keep Jack Frost at bay.  Shadows have life in the fall; in the summer there’s just shade but now as the leaves drop the form and structure appear.  Visual cues that the days are growing shorter and winter is approaching.

Vespa scooter and fall leaves

This morning I had decided to make a stop at the local coffee house and get home to take care of a growing list of chores but not before I made a little meandering ride through the valley to watch the greenery give way to the falling of leaves.

Vespa scooter in rural landscape

Standing in this field I found myself wishing I had the view camera with me.  I’ve been feeling the tug to expose sheets of film again, perhaps because I was going through boxes of gelatin silver prints.  I wonder if I always get confused in the fall?

Early morning view of Saint's Cafe in State College, PAEventually I get to Saint’s Cafe in State College, Pennsylvania where a cup of tea will take the chill from by fingers. The same long, articulated shadows are everywhere in the morning, whispering of the decline in sunlight and cold days ahead.  Right now I don’t care at all but the older I get the rougher the winter is to take.  I wonder how long it will be before I don’t want to venture out on two wheels to experience the world first hand…

Seduced by the Morning

October 23, 2014 by Scooter in the Sticks 10 Comments

farm field at sunrise

I’m a morning person.  Or at least I used to be.  Eyes still spring open automatically at 6:05am regardless of when they closed.  The mind is ready but the body has begun to resist the transition from horizontal to vertical, from the dream world to the real world.  Riding one morning last week I was reminded how I’m seduced by the morning as I watched the light sweep across the fields as the sun breached the horizon.  Fog and mist glows as the day begins and I am grateful to be a witness.  I know so many people who can’t remember seeing the sunrise, don’t care actually because the bed offers a greater allure.

A road at sunriseNot every Vespa ride unwinds as a quiet, zen-like experience.  Some mornings are unwelcome packages of rush, stress and chaotic thinking allowing mere glimpses of the world.  A quick stop to drink in the day first and forget about placing the scooter in the picture.  A few seconds of freedom before moving on into the noise of the day.

On through the day with a taste of the morning lingering on the lips.  Oh, the joy of riding…
