Morning Postcard

July 31, 2007 by Scooter in the Sticks 4 Comments

Kim looks out for me. Yesterday morning around 5:30 AM she wakes me with the words “there’s fog outside”. No matter how sleepy I am those words don’t fail to awake the rider and photographer. So I left for work early just so I could ride (I wanted to say ramble but I feel that word is spoken for) a bit in the magic.

The fog was not of the ground level variety and instead hovered higher in the air where it filtered the light a bit. This photo was made along Bear Meadows Road in Rothrock State Forest.

Went on a long ride with my friend Paul Ruby. He has acquired a new to him Kawasaki Concours motorcycle as a replacement for his Suzuki DRZ400 SuperMoto. Pretty drastic change. I have not had time to write that up yet or go through all the pictures I made. Hopefully by the end of the week.

No fog this morning so I think it will be a straight ride to work. Even that is a fine time…

Rather striking image what with the sun slicing across the bridge and rails….and scooter. Did you know that PennDot calls those “guide rails” and in the rest of the world they are known as “guard rails?” Go figure.

I went for a 60 miler on Sunday (no fog at 101 degrees and 17% humidity). I brought one of my cameras with me and I tried to ride with Steve Williams eyes. I failed. I saw nothing. I stopped for nothing. I even tried riding to an area I hadn’t been to in 25 years. Guess I was looking for something new. I kept slowing down but not stopping and the large hawk that I spotted with a ground squirrel in its beak was headed in the wrong direction. Guess I was wishing I was riding in fog in central PA. Your latest is great!

P’taker: Yes, I knew about the guide rails. I actually talked with a Penn Dot guy once and he said they used to be guard rails when they were actually built strongly enough to deter vehicles from leaving the road. Like those big concrete barriers and the old post and cable types. But these are decorations and are visual barriers.

They could put up reflectors and save some cash.

kitkatknit: 101 degrees! No wonder you didn’t see anything. If I was out in weather like that I would have pictures of food in air conditioned places….

Birds of prey always seem like good subjects but hard to shoot. Next time, when the temperature drops below 100 maybe.

Nice blog! And great pictures. The vespa is sweet! I used to ride Bajaj scooters in ( the Vespas of India) growing up.
I share your feeling about Triumph- there’s something about their look- very classic.
