Did you see the sunrise today?
There’s no hum to the road before sunrise. Night slowly drains away before dawn as the sky begins to glow with the promise of another day. I believe I’ve been genetically coded to witness this drama. On foot, with the dogs, or alone on a path the sunrise is a visual symphony of tone and color that never fails to ignite a moment of wonder.
Astride the Vespa scooter it’s no different. My spirit soars as the road reaches into the day and I’m reminded of the mystical world in which I turn. All because I’m on the road before sunrise…

I did see it, but then I realized I was on holiday still and went back to bed without taking any photos. Glad you captured it for all to see.

Holidays… You can’t argue with any decision when you’re on holiday.
Lowbuckrider says
I take it for granted. Every day I get up a 5 to go to work & ride into it. There are those days it chooses to knock my socks off.
Steve Williams says
In the summer I’m generally up before sunrise. As the days get shorter it’s easier to be up to see the sunrise though winter sunrises are often faint in comparison to summer. Regardless, it’s those knock your socks off scenes that makes it special. I see a lot of them.

I have to be at work two days a week at 5:30 and one day at 4:00 AM. It’s always nice to see the sky begin to turn a warmer blue and then light filters over the hills. The 4:00 AM ride is always dark, foggy and filled with four legged spectators, the 5:00 AM rides are a delight this time of year.
Steve Williams says
Yep. You’re seeing what I see.
Melu says
I am not a morning person so you will not find me out there at that time of the day. But I love the photograph, especially the little island of light created by the Vespa’s headlight. Nice job.
Steve Williams says
I wasn’t always a morning person. I think I really started to appreciate the pre-dawn hours about 15 years ago when Kim and I were in Ogunquit, Maine. I would get up and drag myself and my view camera to the beach to photograph the landscape at sunrise. Then I would wander back to our room and go back to bed. Little by little I would stay up longer until I was “a morning person”. While I still like to laze in bed every now and then it only takes a hint of fog or odd light in the morning to have me out in the world.

I saw a lot of sunrises when I used to commute into downtown Denver for work. Now, not so much.
Sometimes though, as you say, the experience is worth the getting up early.
Steve Williams says
Everyone should see the sunrise from time to time.
I remember when I used to be up all night and would see it at the end of a shift at the shipyard. Different feel to sunrise in that situation…
RichardM says
I’ll save the sunrise photos for the Winter. Much easier to be up and about before sunrise.
Steve Williams says
Does the sun is always trying to rise in the winter where you are!
Bill Leuthold says
I get up early and retrieve the newspaper from the end of the driveway. It is usually before the sun rises. I mostly enjoy the full moon mornings as it is setting as the sun rises. My favorites are when I have a long ride and leave early, often as early as 4:00. The sun is usually rising on the east side of I-95 as I approach Savannah, Georgia. It is always a welcome site.

Definitely it´s my favourite part of the day for riding. The light is magic, the traffic is low, almost everyone is sleeping, except the birds in the woods and even some of them in the small citys. It´s like being back to basics, something like a “reborn”.
.
Ride safe,
Vasco
PS. Steve, looking at your 1st photo, i have to say i miss your GTS photos without the top case mounted. I know it´s difficult to abdicate as you get one (i used to have one on my old GT200) but, at least to my eyes, it interferes a lot with the shape of the GTS : pratical for commuting, a disaster for photographs. 🙂
Steve Williams says
I agree that that topcase really does interfere with the beauty of the GTS. But it’s utility is unquestionable so I resign a bit of beauty for function!
