I came across this video on Twitter and thought it did a good job reflecting what off the pavement riding is like with those big BMW GS and GS Adventure bikes. And a smattering of the smaller BMW dual sport bikes like the F800 GS.
I remember riding a 1970 Kawasaki dirt bike in far more serious terrain and places that I would never attempt with one of the big BMWs. Even so, this video makes riding off the pavement look great.
My wife and I have been riding scooters and motorcycles for several years now. We recently purchased dirt bikes for the family for less than $3000. I can’t tell you how much fun we’ve been having. It’s a blast just riding around fire roads and single track exploring!
The best part is that there are no teenagers with cellphones or spaced out drivers who are trying their best to be the end of you! You get to enjoy riding. Absolutely wonderful and I wish we would’ve discovered this hobby earlier.

I was on that ride, but I’m not in any of the pictures… because I was way out front… because I was on a light weight Suzuki DR650. OK, not WAY out front, but I can’t understand why riders want to challenge this terrain on big GS’s. Not to take away from Jeremy of Alt Riders, however. Not only is he an expert rider on that big red GS, but he worked his butt off to put on this event, as did the other Alt Rider crew. I mean they hustled and sweated to make everything work. Matt and the rest of SMCC provided a great lunch, and I will be joining that group as a member.
PS: I sold Black Betty, my G650GS, to Craig Kissell. If you’re interested, maybe you can finagle a test ride.
Keith: My memories of dirt bikes mirror your description. Sometimes I wonder what stands in my way of getting one and heading out on the nearest fire road.
Just about the time those thoughts are firing so do the pains in my joint….

Poppawheelie: Judging from the quality of the video Alt Riders and SMCC seem professional and attentive to details so that riders have a good time. Despite the big machines it still looked like fun.
The DR650 is a fun bike. I’ve ridden one before.
I’ve almost pushed ideas of motorcycles out of my head and there you go and plant a G650GS in my head. Oh well, I guess I need to daydream once in awhile.

Next year, I am going to organize a K75 run, that while restricted to pavement as smooth as an 18-year-old baby’s ass, will reflect a very rugged ride philosophy. (Hopefully, you will have a K75 by then.)
