The Idiot Rider

The AirMoto pump has endured two stupid moves now.

Time For a Little Personal Evaluation

Before each ride I go through a mental checklist to ensure the safe operation of whatever machine I decide on for the day. An oil level check, chain tension where appropriate, turn signals, brake lights, make sure the battery is fully charged, and tire pressure. And a superstitious twist of one specific bolt on the Himalayan that once wiggled out. And twice now I have failed to successfully complete the tire pressure check without damaging something. Thankfully, my mishaps have happened in the driveway or within a hundred feet. Both lapses of memory, or perhaps merely the sloppy approach to hurrying to get on the road. Such is the sad story of the slow battering of my AirMoto air pump.

Distracted by the desire to get on the road sooner I walked away to gather some gear while the AirMoto was pumping air into the front tire. And when I started up the road I heard a strange, rhythmic banging which was the pump being spun around and beaten onto the pavement. I forgot it was still attached. Thankfully all this occurred away from the front fender and I didn’t damage anything. Or pull the valve stem from the wheel.

Shocked by the Stupidity

After I cleaned everything up I rode into town to return a library book. The whole way my thoughts rotated between needing to purchase a new pump and how could I be so stupid. Again. Not long ago I did something similar with the Kawasaki W650.

If there’s a lesson to remember it’s that I forget things more easily now. Or maybe I’m more easily distracted. Whatever it is I have to add a few more elements of deliberation to my pre-ride checks.

Ego Bruised

The only real damage done was to my ego. I want to think of myself as competent, clear-headed, and safe to ride. While I’m not concerned about my ability to ride safely on the road I am miffed that I do things like this. I’ve begun to recognize that I rush to get going sometimes. And in that state of mind it’s easy to overlook important details. Like locking the door and heading out to the scooter or motorcycle only to realize I left my gloves or helmet inside. Or the camera. Water bottle. Stuff.

I know why pilots use a checklist. It’s just too easy to overlook things when you get comfortable. I’m not ready to create a riding checklist yet but I am paying more attention.

Maybe an idiot would be unconcerned. This idiot is concerned about his pre-ride mistakes. I’ll make adjustments.

It was a fine morning for a ride regardless. I just love being out in the autumn air.

With me it’s the garage door for me, several times I’ve had to turn around and head home to check I’ve closed it. Its only a matter of time.

I rebelled against the idea of a checklist. I have allowed myself to sink into them, as they make my mind more comfortable. It also helps me to do one task at a time and complete it rather than multitask. Age is an unforgiving taskmaster.
