Riding on Christmas Eve
I left the house with the thermometer hovering at 6F. Cold but manageable with the right gear. It’s a tradition to ride on the day before Christmas and this year was no exception. I confess my aging body doesn’t deal with the cold as well as it once did and I suspect the time will come when I choose the easy chair over the scooter.
There were some patches of scary ice on this ride. One patch that caused me to turn around and go another way. You can have a look at a video of the ride on my YouTube channel.
But what I really wanted to do is wish you a Merry Christmas if you’re reading this. And my best wishes for a safe and healthy New Year!
John Gullett says
Merry Christmas to you Steve, and Happy New Year, with the best miles yet ahead of you !
Scooter in the Sticks says
Thank you John. And best wishes for a Merry Christmas for you too. As far as the road ahead goes, who knows what tomorrow will bring…
Larry morland says
Merry Christmas Steve. At 77 yrs old I’ve switched to ebikes.
Scooter in the Sticks says
An ebike sounds like a perfect companion to me. It’s certainly on my list when motorcycles and scooters no longer seem appropriate.
Merry Christmas!
David Masse says
Merry Christmas to you, your family, and your friends. I hope that 2023 will see us all enjoying a return to more normal and happier times.
Scooter in the Sticks says
I agree wholeheartedly David. A return to something resembling normal would be a gift. I’m hopeful that 2023 will bring it.
Merry Christmas to you and your entire family.
Karl Stumpf says
Good morning Steve,
The other day I was on my Vespa to get it inspected. The temperature was 23.
It was ver nippy I must add.
Just want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Scooter in the Sticks says
23F is a cold ride.
Thank you for your kind wishes for the holidays. I return the same to you and your family!

And here’s wishing you and your family a very merry Christmas and great start into the new year. I have to admit that my bike has been in the garage since the beginning of December, and its battery is safely tucked away in the basement, where it will stay warm and dry until warmer weather once again beckons me out onto the roads.
Scooter in the Sticks says
There are times when I think tucking the scooters and motorcycle away for the winter would be a better choice. But so far, the desire to do a little riding during the winter still creeps in.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. And best wishes for a fine New Year!
Robert says
Yea for sticking to your tradition! Merry Holidays! I used to have a tradition of riding the Sunday before Christmas because the weather always seemed mild that day, but that tradition has fallen by the wayside. Congrats for keeping your tradition. Hope you can for many more years.
Kofla Olivieri says
Feliz Navidad and a Happy New Year!
Scooter in the Sticks says
Thank you. Have a great New Year!
Dave Montgomery says
Merry Christmas Steve. I hope you and your family have a happy and healthy 2023.
Scooter in the Sticks says
Thank you Dave. We’re looking forward to the coming year. Best wishes to you as well.
FRED GARTNER says
Merry Christmas to you and yours and thank you for the gifts of words and videos you share throughout the year. All the best from the Midwest.
Scooter in the Sticks says
Thank you for your kind and supportive words. I’ll keep riding and sharing my thoughts and experiences until I grow quiet. So far though, my head is full of thoughts.
Karl Utrecht says
Hi, Steve…and Merry Christmas! I haven’t responded very often, but since I retired from riding my scooters at the advanced age of 85 I have a little more extra time, and have changed-over to an electric trike. But, I really do miss the scooter experiences!
Scooter in the Sticks says
It is good to read that someone is still riding at 85. I know luck and genetics play a role but still, I see so many people stop long before that. Riding is important to me and I hope to keep going as you have. Even if it is a different kind of vehicle. Moving in the world is a wonderful thing!
Best wishes for a Happy New Year Karl!
Tom says
Hello Steve – Happy Holidays and best for a new year of riding, writing and filming!
Scooter in the Sticks says
I’m already making notes for rides and projects. I have to rein in some of my ideas though. Some of the videos require actors!
Happy New Year!
Jim Zeiser says
Six degrees Steve? Dude. The wind chill at anything above an idle is in the minus teens fahrenheit. I hope your electric clothing was set at sizzling. Have a Happy New Year.
Scooter in the Sticks says
I’ve ridden in much colder weather with less effective gear. But I was also younger. Age makes a difference.
I don’t have any electrics other than gloves and grips. Everything else is purely layers and exclusion of the air from my tender skin.
Happy New Year!
