Ringing in the New Year
Managed to make it 15 steps from the front door today. Any dreams of riding were dashed by the pernicious virus that’s continued to chew at body and spirt. A quick selfie before returning to bed was all I could manage.
Riding on Another New Year’s Day
I always try and get out for a ride to mark the start of a new year. Not sure why it was important, it’s not really, but a tradition of sorts. This ride in 2014 was marked by snow, ice and single digit temperatures. Today would have been considerably milder if I were able to get out.
If.
Anyway, best wishes to each of you for the coming year. I have no wisdom to share as this day is fading fast and my light-headedness is getting the best of me.
Until I ride again…

Steve, here’s some extra wishes for a prompt and full recovery! Misery when we feel sick dominates . We managed a good stroll today, but my walking was usurped by Icey sidewalks and travel time over the last 3 days…creating a minor slump in energy. However, my heart was filled with the sheer joy of time with our 18 month old great niece… Dancing to “Jingle Bell Rock” with her somehow made all else less important. I suspect that no ride could better inform a definition of love and the “Why?” Hope you are dancin’/ridin’ again soon.
Seeing my granddaughter is great medicine. I don’t run into children that often and see that exuberance that I lost long ago.
Careful on the ice. No broken bones for 2019!
Steve;
I noticed in the upper right hand section of your blog that you follow “Life on two wheels”. I just checked out that blog and saw that you commented on a recent post on that blog.
I have followed you for almost a decade Steve. I hope you avoid delving into politics in your blog, because at best, you will alienate at least half your followers.
I have no plans to delve into politics on Scooter in the Sticks. There are plenty of places for people to engage those conversations. I commented on David’s post because he posted it.
I’ve carefully avoided even the political topics of riding — helmets, loud exhaust, etc. The only hate mail I ever got was years ago when I made an off-handed comment about a loud motorcycle in the neighborhood. I didn’t realize my opinion was infringing on the right to be loud.
So never fear — nothing political will appear unless the government bans my scooter, insists ride only on the shoulder, or asks I swear a loyalty oath to an American made machine. Suppose that would fall into the custom realm…
Sorry you must start 2019 with a virus. We are hoping the rest of the new year is healthy and happy. No fun riding when your brain feels like it’s sloshing around inside your skull!
Sloshing! That’s exactly the feeling. Thank you!
Happy New Year to you and yours Steve, hope this finds you feeling better
It hasn’t Dom. Not one bit.
Guid new year Steve, and lang may yer lum reek.
Thank you Bill! Hope you are having a great new year.
Continue to feel better Steve! I had my annual January 1 ride yesterday but the sun couldn’t be found and the humidity was insufferable. And on January 1? It just wasn’t my usual New Year wind greeting.
At least you were riding. The weather seldom is exactly what I want. Had to laugh when I read “insufferable humidity”. In January.
Happy New Year, Steve and speedy recovery. I might not comment often but I am still around following you from the Black Forest, Germany. All the best, SonjaM
I check in on your site from time to time to look at the German landscape. Someday I’ll get back there and ride.
You have the same sparkly lights we do, and my health is the same too, sparkly red and green, mostly green. I’m recovering from my second bout with head and chest cold in a month. Friday looks like a good day for riding. Maybe you’ll be recovered well enough by then.
I hope I’m recovered by Friday. From where I sit right now –12:42am on Thursday — it seems unlikely. Just sent a message to my rheumatologist inquiring whether I should skip this week’s dose of medication that surpresses my immune system.
Hope you get well soon. No fun being sick.
Happy New Year.
Exactly right. No fun at all.
Steve: Argh, the sickness that takes forever (or at least seems that way) to get over. Been there more than I care to remember, and really hope you shake this really soon. Get the rest you need, though!
This one has been more intense for a longer time than anything I’ve had. The heart attack was easier.
Ugh.
Happy New Year, Steve, and I hope you feel better soon!
Happy New Year!
Hi, Steve,
Happy New Year!…and hoping you get feeling better soon!
Karl U
Thanks Karl. Still sick. 12 days now. Ugh.
Just checked out the blog…reading this hoped to hear you’re better by now. Maybe not. Gotta be over it soon…at least you know 2019 can only get better!
I’ve finally recovered after almost a month of feeling awful. The illness completely drained my energy and interest regarding riding and blogging. The Vespa has sat motionless in the garage now despite plenty of opportunities to ride. So as you say, things have to improve from here!
We’ve been missing your sparkle in our day. Hoping you are soon back on track, with health and the joy of finding it again warming your heart and lifting your spirits!
Thanks for your kind words of support. I appreciate them.
Illness, frigid temperatures and seasonal malaise has tarnished the sparkle for riding and writing. Slowly returning to some semblance of normal. Whatever that might be…
